Wake Smarter Review - Not just another dumb alarm app!

image

The typical alarm clock will wake you in the morning by emanating a terrible pulsing screech or similarly upsetting noise. True that newer models offer better options than the 5AM screech, but wouldn't you rather your alarm clock do something smarter than that? Maybe tell you the weather, the latest news, your calendar events for the day followed by your favorite tunes (without commercials and other distractions)? Wake Smarter does all of those things. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that it uses voice recognition so you can even yell at it!

What I played this week - Snow Fight!

image

This week, I really had a blast with Snow Fight, but I was not happy about the game offering up a few appetite-whetting levels, and slapping you with an in-app purchase to continue (not a big fan of in-app purchases)... I put a crowbar in my iTunes wallet and plunked down the fat 99 pennies required to unlock the full 40+ levels remaining (yes, quite the iTunes Scrooge). The first zone of 6 or so levels is gratis, but doubtful anyone will begrudge the additional expense of unlocking the others. Simple fun is priceless after all, and the game does deliver that...

Real Pinball HD Vampire Review

image

Real Pinball HD Vampire is an immersive pinball experience for iPad, and for a limited time only 99 cents (found it free using AppCube Explorer). I have some complaints about the action of the table--like flippers adjusted to make aiming harder--complaints one might make of a real pinball table. The fact that this is the kind of gripe I have about it, shows just how good the simulation of a real pinball experience RP HD has achieved...

Factor Samurai - Cut non-prime numbers down to size!

Back in my day when we used things like sliderules, protractors, and multiplication tables (had mine printed on a little cheat sheet), I remember thinking what a total drag mathematics were. I'd rather be outside playing kickball. If I would have had Factor Samurai, I would have jumped on my "times tables" like a shark eating a surfer (go shark)! If you got school kids mildly to severely uninterested in math, this is a clever way to get them interested. Read on for more review comments and info on the app...

EA employees go Ronin!

image

Diversity in any market is a good thing. It is the driving force behind uber-successful virtual exchanges like the App store, where large programming houses offer top of the line products right up next to an app banged out by an 11 year old (which in some cases might be the better choice). I love to see it, and never shy away from encouraging it. Take the case of former EA employee faced with a choice to relocate (to the U.S.) or open up his own mobile gaming shop. Read on for the 411 on how the newly minted PlaySide is going to endeavor to bring you the best in mobile gaming...

iFrogz Mix - Edge protection without the bulk!

image

Looking a little like a Kevlar vest for iPhone, the new iFrogz Mix is a polycarbonate hybrid case with a thicker TPU edge. TPU (Thermoplastic polyurethane) is a choice material for it's resistance to abrasions, oil and grease, while retaining excellent elasticity. It's better than traditional rubber in some respects as it is lacking in overly adhesive properties (easier to pull out of the back pocket), with the added benefit of anti-microbial properties. Wow that sounded scientific... I need to stop researching and reviewing all these darn cases...

Snow Fight FREE Wintertime fun!

Shoot, you know I love a good snowball fight! Ain't had any of the neighborhood kids try for me in recent winters though. I can still hurl a mean iceball when the mood hits me.

What I played this week - EA gamefest!

image

What I played this week was mostly a festival of EA 99 cent titles (Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, Mirror's Edge, and Battleship) that cost me too many hours of distraction when I should have been doing more productive things. I also found an app finder app called AppsCube Explorer that allows you to browse apps through a 3D interface. It helped me waste yet even more time by enhancing the navigation required to find more freebies--so I could waste even more time--if that makes sense. Select your next virtual iTunes gem in a slick 3-D gamelike interface!
