EA is offering a ton of great iPhone apps at 99 cents (Real Racing, Dead Space, Need for Speed, The Sims, and more), and many others at reduced rates in their Game Feast Sale (main iPhone game site here). Offer lasts though Nov 28th 2011, so don't delay. Some of the finest games we have reviewed on our blogs this year are on this list!!
Welcome to the Thanksgiving edition of my somewhat-weekly column featuring the games, apps or even gadgets I played with during the week. It's not always strictly iOS related, as last week (or was it the week before?) I reviewed the HP TouchPad, though a couple of the apps mentioned also have iOS versions. This week, it's all iPhone/iPod/iPad and all free, so if you want to get some game on this turkey day weekend, it won't cost you a cent. Bowmaster Lite brings you the thrill of the early pilgrims, who couldn't go to the supermarket to bag a turkey. Chromian Wars is a new war strategy sim game with AR features. My fav of the bunch has to be Falling Stars--quickly make funky tones/beats with this addictive and free music maker game.
Speakal has some of the more interesting audio products available for iPhone, and iPod. I have written about several on our blogs, and in terms of quality, have found them a decent product for the price. Maybe not in the same class as say the Sonos or iHome audio products like the iW1 we've reviewed, but they still produce a good sound. Speakal has the market nearly cornered in unique and eye-catching designs with clever features (see my review of the motion-sensing, rechargeable iPig). If you want a sound dock that simply looks good, sounds good, and doesn't break the bank, the iKurv is a good pick--which, by the way, will also push composite video from your iPod/iPhone to a TV or monitor.
If you're really into 3D games like Galaxy on Fire, Shadow Gun, Dead Space, and Real Racing (and who that owns iPod touch isn't), then you need to check out the mophie pulse, or add it to the holiday gift list for that touch-toting loved one. It not only pumps out stereo volume through tiny L/R speakers embedded on each side of the unit, but serves as a handy gamepad holder and protective case as well. The pulse is not just a great gaming accessory. It turns iPod touch into a mini entertainment center, and I do not exaggerate. Attention iPod touch users, this is a decent sound accessory. Sometimes you want to just kick back with a cool beverage of choice, and you know...? Do something crazy with your iPad!! Maybe something radical like: observe the conservation of angular momentum applied to a smooth body in motion as it turns ever more rapidly around it's center of mass. Huh, you say?!.. Ever see a skater speed up in a spin just by pulling in her arms? That's an application of exactly what I'm talking about, and you can learn a lot more about these interesting physics principles using the HyperPhysics app!
If you are a Mamba Nation fan, then you will likely love Mamba Nation Battle (free on the app store). You can create an Avatar in the game and use it to go head to head with your FB friends, or play even if you don't want to be connected to Facebook. Check out the video embedded or see more PR info below.
This will definitely be a different kind of "What I played this week" post. The HP TouchPad tablet might be remembered--if remembered at all--in the annals of gadget ignominy. Just another iPad contender that hardly made it to the ring, before HP decided to pull the plug. I won't be the first or last to say that it's a shame. The product has some rough edges to be sure, but serious potential as well. I played several decent apps on it this week that I felt deserved (along with the device itself) at least a minor review (2 recommendations mentioned here--free Gun Bros and Appy Geek have iOS equivalent in the App store). Though it isn't strictly iPhoneLife material, this review might interest the gadget nut curious how the TouchPad stacks up to our beloved iPad. Actually pretty well...
Can't count how many music player alternatives I have tried over the years (have to take off my shoes for sure). Suffice to say, I can't really say any jumped out and made me go, "THAT'S IT!"--like Charlie Brown's epiphany when Lucy tells him he has the fear of everything. Wall of Sound didn't really make me do that, except maybe a little bit. Then it had a couple of glitches, so I calmed down. Still, it is pretty well done for a freebie, and provides a unique way to find and play tunes...
Trailblazers, and rugged outdoors types looking for a power pack that adds advanced GPS app features (mophie introducing their own app to go with the new juice pack) need look no further than the latest Juice pack product, called the "outdoor edition". Access to enhanced map sets, and GPS tracking features are among the features the app will offer... read on for more PR info, or go to the link above...
