In my previous review thread on the Sonos Play:3, I covered unbox and setup minutiae. In this wrap-up post I'll cover setting up dual Play:3 speakers in a left/right configuration, the new Sonos iOS control app, and consider the strengths (and a few weaknesses) of the new wireless speaker system!
Clock apps are popping up all over, and though I didn't have much time this week (pun intended) to play my 2 current fav games in the app world--namely Jet Car Stunts, and Pinball Magic (alas, I completed all the tracks in Paper Racer)--I did have time to check out 2 new clock apps and a cool flying game. Globaclock is an interesting way to keep world time zones straight, and Talking Jelly Clock is just, well weird. Breitling Reno Air Races is mucho 3-D racing fun...!
Do not ask why you should (unless you have a fear of flying), just go get this game. Free, with high-quality graphics and superb flying action, Breitling Reno Air Races is free, and newly updated with bug fixes and many new features to buzz over (see what I did there?)... This week's "What I played" column is a bit different in that I went and grabbed some "app"-cessories from my favorite gadget site ( ThinkGeek.com) for this review. Both products are gaming gimmicks, and some of the software content might generously be described as a "work in progress". Still, Pinball Magic (New Potato), and my3D (Hasbro) are affordable gadgets that can spice up your gaming experience, somewhat old school style.
The Sonos Play:3 is a compact wireless speaker that packs a sonic punch, can be controlled from your iPhone/iPad or Android device, but does oh so much more! As part of a larger wireless system, you can push your fav music, internet audio streams to multiple rooms (aptly named "party mode"). In this post, I'll detail configuration and setup of the new Play:3.
Travel. Who has the time? Most of us working stiffs don't get much vacation time, so when you do, you want to make the most of your trip, right? Find all the best spots, and not miss anything important. So, you need to do your homework, and take along a guide that knows all the secrets, ins/outs of your destination. If that destination is Europe, you will want to review and take along Rick Steves' free travel app.
I have done a number of reviews (simply search our site for "Sonos) on the Sonos S5 wireless music system, and am also a proud owner. I really can't rave enough about the product. It's simply the best portable home music experience I have encountered. One minor complaint I have is that the S5 is a bit bulky. Now Sonos has released a smaller speaker model dubbed the Play:3. It has all the wireless good stuff inside that the S5 has, but in a compact footprint. I'll be reviewing one soon to see how the sound stacks up, but in the meantime, you can check out the press release and some YouTube action on the Play...
iLounge recently reviewed the Bonjiovi DPS app, and gave it a positive review (B-), so figured I would check it out (esp. being free). I agree that the app improves iOS sound quality, at least coming out of my iPad (due to Digital Power Station's real-time audio re-mastering), but maybe not enough really to make me give up the built-in player apps. In other "what I played" news, Paper Racer and Jet Car Stunts are still my picks for casual game time. Read on for my review of the free DPS app.
Dock choices for your iPhone or iPad, are seemingly as numerous as apps. We have reviewed a ton of them here on the blogs or in the mag, and it's easy to get overwhelmed picking one. The Stem TimeCommand dock is "simple-smart" gear (coined that term just for this review) to charge your iOS device in the wee hours, and wake your butt in the AM (the simple part). It does the essentials as well as pump out crisp audio. It also has some very cool features (the smart part)...
