Hello from CES 2013!

image

The press room at the annual 2013 Computer Electronics Show, in Las Vegas, Nevada, was pretty dead this afternoon when I grabbed my gear, but soon that will change significantly as tons of press people from the world over descend on what is arguably the biggest electronics extravaganza in the known universe (or something)! Anyway, this is my inaugural post to remind everyone to stay connected to our blogs this week as several of us iPhoneLifers will be covering the show (Jan 8-11, 2013) in near real-time, or at least as frequently as our wireless connections will allow. It should prove to be an exciting event, and not just for iPhone/iPad/iPod-related gear (though there will be a ton of that), but also mucho mobile and just plain cool gadgets, sick apps, latest car gizmos and so much more...!!! Words can't even describe the coolness, really, so stay tuned!

Review - iHome iW3 Wireless Speaker System

image

Back in 2011, I reviewed the iW1 when it first came out; an awesomely portable/rechargeable wireless speaker from iHome--portable, as in literally no wires--with an internal 2600 mAh Li-ion battery. The Wi-Fi setup was a bit sketchy, but I finally figured out a compromise by setting up a second Wi-Fi access point. Been looking forward to trying out one of the new iW3 models and got my hands on a review unit. The iW3 is like the iW1, but taller, lighter and easier to haul around the house. The sound quality is pretty close to what I remember from the iW1, and though it won't blow out a window, it will let you easily push quality music to any room in your home.

What I Played this Week - Angry Birds Space HD, and Starbase Gunship!

image

Two awesome 99 cent titles this week, and likely my last WIPTW article of 2012, so a happy holidays to everyone, and here is hoping you have a great new year in 2013! Starbase Gunship is a new game from Capital j Media. A stationary 3D shooting game that puts you at the center of the action as enemy ships and incoming weapons head toward your base station. Blasting through and surviving enemy waves will allow you to build up enough creds to update your base firepower and protection levels. Angry Birds Space HD is pig busting in zero-G, and like every other Angry Birds (all of which are currently on sale), powerfully addictive.

Get Great FREE apps FREE and also at Holiday Sale Prices!

image

Got to love the holiday sales, right? In the spirit of the season, several vendors are proving their "non-Scrooge-iness" by offering up reduced pricing and FREE apps to close out 2012! But some only appear to be free, so FREE buyer beware! First up, you can grab great Activision re-styled classics like Pitfall (uh, TOTALLY FREE), Guitar Hero ($1.99), Call of Duty: Zombies ($1.99) and more great games at reduced prices (search App store for Activision). You can also grab a slew of cool games like Shoot the Zombirds (FREE) from Infinite Dreams, iQuarium HD (99 cents), and Jelly Defense (99 cents), plus several more low-priced titles. While you are up in the App store nabbing these great games, you might check out Sleigher and Ears the Astronaut, both pseudo-FREEBIES that I must now sadly report require in-app purchases to advance, which RUINS FREE, IMO (and must now pull from my review queue)...

Starbase Gunship now available!

I previously reviewed Battle Fleet from Capital j Media--a unique iOS naval strategy game--and so was stoked to check out their new game, Starbase Gunship, which just went live (you can grab it now for intro price of 99 cents)! The game requires you to play the 3-D space gunner lucky enough to be on duty just as waves of incoming ships, missiles, etc. careen towards your home station. I'll post up a full review later, but you can check out the trailer above to get the idea...

Kingdom Rush is now FREE on the app store, so do not tarry, lest thou findeth a tariff awaiteth thee the morn! If you are a major KR fan already, you can also grab a free comic featuring the heroes in the game! If you are a certifiable KR nut, you can learn more on the coming full HD version of the game and vote to keep the saga going here at Steam Greenlight... Thou shalt heretofore be dubbed--ok, I'll stop now...

Sooner Review - Manage your time with a thumb-swipe!

image

Apps that help organize your life are a dime a dozen, and while many are effective, it's hard to find one that brings together all the right features. Sooner does a good job of unifying time management needs into one handy interface, but you actually have to spend some of your precious time organizing activities, listing goals, and then setting some deadlines and reminders to achieve them. There are likely a hundred different ways (and apps) to achieve time management nirvana, but if you take the time to set it up, Sooner does it with singular aplomb!

Bounty Racer - FREE for limited time AGAIN!!!

image

It was free before...

It may not be free again...

...but either way, go grab BOUNTY RACER while it is still FREE now on the App store! Reviewed on my scrub somewhat-gaming blog here, you can relive Mario and every other cart-like racing game (but better) for FREE!! Ever smell free? Ever taste it? It tastes, well...darn good, so go GRAB IT NOW HERE (in case you didn't see the link posted, like, 2 lines above)! And remember, you heard it here at iPhoneLife! Bounty Racer is totally and completely FREEEE!!!! No strings attached, it really is free... except the IAPs, of course...

What I played this week - Slenderman, and Ice Riders!

image

Slenderman: Unknown Chronicles is one of a few games or apps on iTunes related to the Slender horror genre. The legend is of a tall, slender man that appears in the background of old photographs that include small children. Evidence of kidnappings surround these events, and the Slenderman is purportedly able to stretch his arms and torso to extreme lengths to capture his quarry. The game is sort of like an iOS version of Blair Witch Project (if anyone remembers that)! Ice Riders, a decidedly upbeat, platform-like snowboard simulation combines custom course design with tricky game physics to create a unique, chilly and fun time-killer...
