A variety of audio accessories are available for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Unfortunately, figuring out what is compatible, of good quality, and worth your money can be a little overwhelming. Here are a few things you should keep in mind when you're looking for an audio accessory:
- Compatibility: Some iPod touch accessories may not work with the iPhone, and vice versa. To ensure compatibility with your device, look for the logo that says, "Works with iPhone," "Made for iPad," or "Made for iPod."
- Headsets, earpieces, and headphones: Starting with the iPhone 3G, the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad all use standard headphone jacks. This means that pretty much any headphone, earpiece, or headset will fit perfectly in your device's 3.5 mm stereo audio jack. If you can, test it before your buy.
- FM Transmitters: These accessories connect to your device through the audio jack and transmit the output to an unused FM radio frequency. This allows you to play your music through your car (or any) FM radio. Again, make sure you check for compatibility with your iOS device.
- External Docking Speakers: Many docking speakers are available for the iPhone and iPod touch, but only a few can be used by the iPad (see "How to enjoy music more…" on page 73). Apple sells a Universal Dock Adapter ($59, store.apple.com) that includes five dock adapters that fit iPhone 4, iPhone 3G and 3GS, iPod touch (2nd, 3rd, and 4th generations), and iPod nano gen 5.
