How to assign ringtones to individual contacts

Assign RingtonesYou can assign a different ringtone to each contact, which can help you identify the caller quickly when you receive an incoming call. For example, you might create a ringtone from your spouse's favorite song and use it for his or her calls. You might also create a special ringtone for someone you might want to ignore. Here's how you do it:

  1. Open the Contacts app and tap on the desired contact.
  2. Tap on the Edit button at the top of the screen.
  3. Scroll down to and tap on Ringtone.

  4. Select the desired ringtone.

Edit an individual contact to assign a custom ringtone. Be sure to include their area code.

You need to store the area code (or even country code) as in (800) 555-1234 and not just 555-1234. The most foolproof method is to delete that contact's phone number (but don't delete the contact) and then have that person call you. Next, look in Recent Calls and choose to assign that number to the existing contact. This will ensure that the number is stored exactly the way the carrier sends it.
