Top iPhone apps you should have for MacWorld

First off, Happy New Year!  We are approaching the final count down to MacWorld and aside from a few bookmarks (and macworld - thanks @danielbru for reminding me), there are a few apps you may want to make sure you have installed. I’m going to break the list in two; jailbreak and non jailbreak apps.  I’m also not going to list games. I figure, you would already have that in hand.

iPhone App Development - a primer

I'm writing an article for our printed publication, detailing my experience developing an app for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

While Apple prides themselves in simplicity, developing an app was rather tricky.  However, the results have been rewarding.

More ways to get an iPhone: $197 at Wal-Mart or $99 for a refurb at AT&T!

It's official.  Starting Sunday, you can get an iPhone at Wal-Mart.  As is their trademark, the prices will be lower than elsewhere, but only by $2.  I guess you can buy a couple of apps with the money you save!

Walmart Ready To Give Birth To The iPhone

Well it's been rumored for weeks now and today Walmart officially announced that they will begin selling the Apple iPhone in 2,500 of its stores this Sunday.

The official announcment puts to rest the rumor of Walmart carrying a special 4GB iPhone for $99. Both of the current iPhone models will be available at Walmart stores for $2 less than current pricing elsewhere.

The father of the iPhone, Apple Inc., had no comments on its website.

Macworld without Steve Jobs... a reflection on the first Steve Jobs speech I attended circa 1985

Now that the dust has settled and it's clear that thousands of Apple fans will be deprived of attending a Steve Jobs keynote at Macworld. I thought I'd reflect on the first time I attended one of his talks.

It was in the mid-1980's, after Jobs had been unceremoniously ousted from the very company he started, and around the time he launched his next venture, appropriately named NeXT.  He came to my university, Carnegie Mellon, to research some technology (MachOS) the school had developed which would become the core of his NeXT computer.

iPhone — The Missing Manual

David Pogue's popular help book — iPhone: The Missing Manual — is now available as an iPhone application. The book costs $24.99, but the app is available at a special introductory price of just 4.99. (Regular price is 9.99.) This second edition has new material related to the iPhone 3G and MobileMe. Plus, there are new chapters on the app store and Microsoft Exchange.

Simplify Connecting to Your iPhone via Your Local LAN

image

Due to the Apple SDK constraints on developers of iPhone software, data exchanges with your phone is limited to email and local area network connectivity.

Some iPhone applications such as “Files” allow you to import and read your Word, Excel, and PDF files from your desktop computer to your phone, and move that data to the iPhone by establishing a wireless connection between the phone and desktop over a LAN.

What's the best way to get an iPhone and why?

Groucho Marx once said he wouldn't belong to a club that would have him as a member.  The iPhone club, while already setting records in the smartphone industry, is about to get bigger.

Not everybody has the luxury of an Apple store nearby, and not every AT&T store sells the iPhone.  Plus, when the iPhone 3G was introduced, online ordering went away.  With all of these obstacles, Apple knows there is always room for improvement.

Everything iPhone - Apps, Accessories, Reviews, Wallpapers etc | iPhone Life Magazine

The iPhone has become a benchmark for all other smartphones to compete with.  Reviews on the cases, accessories, apps, wallpapers and more are located below.  Here are a couple of Articles that showcase what we have to offer.  For eaxample, iPhone 4S by Alex Cequea (iPhone Life Magazine Editor in Chief).

In that article, Alex says that the iPhone 4S has the exact same physical form factor as the iPhone 4. However, the insides are a whole different story, and Apple tried to make that very clear. The most notable improvements are the 8MP camera with 1080p video recording, the A5 dual-core processor (same as the iPad 2), and an improved battery life (8 hours of 3G talk time, 200 hours of standby). As far as the capabilities, the new Siri Assistant feature was the highlight of the show. The Siri Assistant recognizes natural language and can answer questions such as, "What's the temperature out today?" Combined with the phone's GPS, you can say something like, "Remind me to call my wife when I get to work." The Assistant will not only know who your "wife" is, it'll also know where "work" is and pop up a reminder to "call Marcy" when you get there."

Here's another great article, The Best iPhone 4 Cases. This article goes on to explain that like its iPhone predecessors, cases have become one of the most popular ways to accessorize your cell phone. Most cell phone consumers buy a case bundled with their new phone to protect it from day one. And who can blame them? Mobile devices have become hugely valuable and expensive items; you want to protect them the best way you can. There are literally hundreds of cases on the market. Let's examine the different options available on the market to help you choose the one that's right for you.

What to know how to create your own app?  "The first step in creating an app is to understand what you want to create and how you will measure its success. Make sure the idea is well vetted and there is a solid business case behind it. There are roughly 600 new apps submitted to Apple each day—what is going to differentiate your app from the thousands that are already available and being launched each week? Here are some questions you’ll want to ask when getting your app idea..."
