Review: GNS 5870 MFI GPS BT Receiver

image

Global Navigation Systems, (a.k.a. GNS) has created and sells a plug and play Bluetooth GPS receiver for IOS devices. It’s called the GNS 5870 MFI. (MFI stands for Made for iPhone). I’m not a stranger to testing out and using GPS systems but this is the first one I have used for my Apple product, so I am excited to work with it. Even though I have some knowledge of GPS, I am by no means an expert in this area. There are two things I look for though. One, a quick satellite lock, and two, it just needs to work.

There is no jail breaking required. I’m testing this out on my Wi-Fi only iPad. The Nav App I am using is Co-pilot.

Highway King Review

image

I tend toward the action/shooter genre of game probably more than any other type, but once in a while it is fun to do nothing more than steer big rig trucks around the screen. Ah, the mindless, harried nature of the time killer game, be it tower defense or whatever, is not unheard of on my iPod. Highway King adds a drawing element to this kind of game, but if you can't trace out basic shapes on the screen of your iPhone or touch, you might have some frustration (like I did).

SEGA Valentine's Day Sale -- Apps for 99 cents!

image

If you are looking for a great Valentine's day deal, SEGA is offering up some great titles for 99 cents (ChuChu Rocket, Super Monkey Ball 2, Phantasy Star, etc.), and the Sonic series for as low as $2.99. You can check out the full list here at their blog. You can click on the linked image on this post to go right to SEGA games in the App store (or simply do a search for SEGA in iTunes).

Get Microsoft OneNote still for free

image

We reported previously on the OneNote app, which I briefly reviewed (the WP7 version) in my HD7 review. My impression is it's a sort of dumbed down Evernote (without the fancy website scraping). You can now sync and track your bullet lists, to-dos and even embed pix in notes on iPhone (requires a Live ID--app will help you create one). This is a reminder that you can still get the mobile iOS app for free in the App store (limited time).

Where were the lines? Verizon iPhone fails to create frenzy, but sales are strong

image

According to AppleInsider, the long lines at Verizon stores never materialized around the country. But according to a Wall Street analyst they spoke to, this could have been due in part to a large number of people pre-ordering online. He estimates that between 700,000 and 1 million Verizon phones were sold between the initial pre-order and the general online pre-orders that began Wednesday.

Verizon users: Welcome to iTunes. Welcome to Chaos

image

Today, millions of new users are joining the iOS ecosystem, thank to the Verizon iPhone, and for many it will be there first introduction to iTunes and the App Store.  Those of us who have lived with an iPhone for years take many things for granted, but I thought I'd point out some of the idiosyncrasies in iTunes for our new friends.

Dual Releases XPS150-Bluetooth GPS Receiver

image

Dual recently released a Bluetooth GPS receiver for iOS devices called the XGPS150. I have to admit that it looks kind of neat. I sent their media contacts a request to test drive that puppy, so we will see if I get a response.

If you recall from a post a while back though, I was placed on the list for their original  iPod Touch GPS Receiver.

Challenging the Iphone’s dominance: Microsoft-Nokia, Sony-Google, but what about Nintendo?

image

Over a week where reports of Ipad 2G have been intensifying, it is also a stark reminder of Apple’s overwhelming dominance that news of an Iphone jailbreaking breakthrough (pun intended) of the iOS 4.2.1 has probably generated more forum interest than any of Nokia’s products in the past 6 months.

As I have written before on my blogpost 29 Dec 2010,

“Typically it seems that during their developmental process, Apple usually identifies 1 feature that would be game-

Everything iPhone - Apps, Accessories, Reviews, Wallpapers etc | iPhone Life Magazine

The iPhone has become a benchmark for all other smartphones to compete with.  Reviews on the cases, accessories, apps, wallpapers and more are located below.  Here are a couple of Articles that showcase what we have to offer.  For eaxample, iPhone 4S by Alex Cequea (iPhone Life Magazine Editor in Chief).

In that article, Alex says that the iPhone 4S has the exact same physical form factor as the iPhone 4. However, the insides are a whole different story, and Apple tried to make that very clear. The most notable improvements are the 8MP camera with 1080p video recording, the A5 dual-core processor (same as the iPad 2), and an improved battery life (8 hours of 3G talk time, 200 hours of standby). As far as the capabilities, the new Siri Assistant feature was the highlight of the show. The Siri Assistant recognizes natural language and can answer questions such as, "What's the temperature out today?" Combined with the phone's GPS, you can say something like, "Remind me to call my wife when I get to work." The Assistant will not only know who your "wife" is, it'll also know where "work" is and pop up a reminder to "call Marcy" when you get there."

Here's another great article, The Best iPhone 4 Cases. This article goes on to explain that like its iPhone predecessors, cases have become one of the most popular ways to accessorize your cell phone. Most cell phone consumers buy a case bundled with their new phone to protect it from day one. And who can blame them? Mobile devices have become hugely valuable and expensive items; you want to protect them the best way you can. There are literally hundreds of cases on the market. Let's examine the different options available on the market to help you choose the one that's right for you.

What to know how to create your own app?  "The first step in creating an app is to understand what you want to create and how you will measure its success. Make sure the idea is well vetted and there is a solid business case behind it. There are roughly 600 new apps submitted to Apple each day—what is going to differentiate your app from the thousands that are already available and being launched each week? Here are some questions you’ll want to ask when getting your app idea..."
