Time for my game reviews of some of the latest and best newcomers to the App Store! We have a whole slew of new games with more on the way, so let’s take a minute to recap what we have so far. These are a few of my favorites of the new crop of games that have popped up in the App Store! This week's reviews include the smash-hit Apocalypse Max as well as new endless runners, Zaxxon Escape and Amazing Runner.
I have a problem, and it’s called infinite runners for my iOS device. I don’t recall which one I first latched on to, but especially since the dawn of the Temple Run style game I’ve gotten hooked on so many I could probably fill a couple home pages up with them. To that end I’ve decided to take a week long look at the latest offerings in this genre. Now that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get reviews for a week straight, but rather my next five entries will be related to this addictive style of game play. The first entry in my series is Super Penguins, the premiere offering from newcomers Supersolid Ltd. I have to say they’re off to a pretty good start.
($5.00) is the fantastic new game from the veteran video game designers at BitMonster
. While it may be their first collective foray into the world of iOS games under their current indie business incarnation, each one of the six senior developers has impressive experience and credentials which uniquely prepare them to spearhead this new game development company. Lili is a new release as well as Apple Editor’s Choice and it is nothing short of a masterful creation! In fact, I would go so far as to say Lili may be a contender for Best RPG of the year.
Gibbits 2 is an innovative arcade puzzle game where you have to help someone who is hanging from a hangman’s rope. While this may sound quite simple and straight forward, it is actually a bit more complex than that. To free the hanging man you need to carefully aim your bow and arrow to cut the rope. Of course, you have to be extra careful not to accidently hit the man causing him further injury, and if you take too long he will die from suffocation.
I really liked Medicore’s first game Sprinkle, and my son still plays Sprinkle Junior even though he’s already beaten it two or three times. Still, I’m not a huge fan of games that employ ragdoll physics, and I was a little bit skeptical that I would enjoy this title. I had no reason to be concerned. The game is a blast, and every step of the way I’ve felt compelled to go back and collect three apples on levels where I missed that goal the first time around (which is most of them). My only concern at this point is that I will finish this some day, and will the new levels be ready yet when that happens?
If you are looking for a game that will have you finding it hard to let go of your iPhone, then Boom the Rock is what you want. It combines all of the best qualities in mobile games, making it a perfect candidate for your next gaming adventure. I knew, from the minute I started to play, that I was in for some fun and that I was going to be playing this game for a while. Reminiscent of some of the older style arcade games, souped up with great graphics and a creative, cartoony look, Boom the Rock is a great creation from Hooligans Entertainment. The game may not be popular yet, but I see it becoming one of the most played games this year.
There are some pretty fantastic games available for the iPhone and the iPad, each with its own set of challenges, its own creativity, and its own unique design. One that really stood though was called The Iron Mouse. The gameplay was clever, the scenery and design were colorful, and it is always a fun play. Some games are only fun and interesting for the first few levels, but then they get boring as you get used to the gameplay. The Iron Mouse however, is super addictive and will leave you struggling to put down your device. It shares some of the best qualities of today’s most popular games, but rest assured it remains an entirely unique game.
This app ushers in an entirely new standard for gaming apps in the future. Designed for the iPad and iPhone in particular, Phoenix Bird is a 3D masterpiece. It is unlike any app I have seen to date, and I was in love the minute I touched the icon. It has an incredibly addictive gameplay coupled with an incredible view of the world. Anytime you find yourself waiting in a waiting room or have some time to kill on the bus, playing this new game will take you on a beautifully creative and colorful adventure that will make time fly. It is absolutely incredible what developer Imagination Apps has done with such a simple concept.
Getting this out a bit late, but hey there is still time to go grab the racing blast that is Bounty Racer for FREE! If you like Crash B-coot or Super Mario Kart racing, then you will love BR from the Quadsphere. Not only combines varied and challenging courses for single players, but head-to-head action as well (see my review here) and much more. Hurry as time is running out to get it while it's free...!
Kill Devils is a new entry to the app market as a strategy defence game. If you are a fan of defence games then you are sure to love Kill Devils, with action packed features to keep you entertained for hours at a time. This game is truly vast, with over 270 stages in all for you to battle through and multiple races available in each of the world's 6 kingdoms. Defend your magical towers across two game modes to rid the world of Ashan of the devils that are threatening to take over.
