After many hours (and quite a few dollars) spent racing in the world of Real Racing 3 (Free), I can confindently say it is a legitimate contender for the coveted award of Best iOS Game of 2013. This game is so visceral, especially the way I race it using the first-person, helmet cam/cockpit perspective.
Between the visual eye candy and the realistic sound effects, I'd say this game blurs the lines between iOS gaming, console gaming, and real life more effectively than any iOS game I've encountered. Where’s a good Virtual Reality headset when you need one?
Game Centered features roundups and in-depth reviews of the best in iOS games. Among the App Store's myriad games, it's all too easy to overlook some of the greats. Each installment of Game Centered will take a close look at a select few worthy of special recognition.
Originally slated for release Friday in the United States, the highly anticipated Real Racing 3 (free) is making its debut one day early, available today in the App Store. The new version of the hit franchise racing game was first announced Aug. 2, 2012, and Apple used it to demonstrate the iPhone 5’s awesome gaming capabilities at the game’s unveiling back in September.
If you’ve been playing Minecraft, and had the thought one day, "Wow, I suddenly wish I had a gun and some ammo and could also run around shooting pixelated Zombies,” thenBlock Warfare: Zombies ($1.99) is definitely your app of the week! You can build blocky worlds to trudge around in, but for the sole purpose of defending them from advancing hoards of, well, block zombies.
I have several games to report on this week, plus interesting news about the makers of Galaxy on Fire 2 releasing a mobile space shooter, MMORTS (Massive Multiplayer Online Real Time Strategy) game later this year. So let's get right to it!
First up is Trigger Fist (my favorite shooter of all time), which I finally got around to grabbing an expansion pack for. Second, I'll review an old emulation game called Gridlee, a game other blog sites say allows you to drop other game ROM files into and play, although I have not yet personally confirmed this. If true, the free Gridlee may have a short life in the app store as Apple frowns on emulators and may soon yank it. Third up is P.R.O.B.E., a free Sci-Fi board game I played, which has a synthed up computer voice. Last but not least is Versu, a just-released interactive story app, reminiscent of old-school adventure games.
Welcome back to my gaming reviews as I try out some of the best new iOS games!
Urban Dictionary defines epic fail as, "Complete and total failure when success should have been reasonably easy to attain." So I find it ironic that Epic Games' sure-fire hit, Infinity Blade: Dungeons has been beset with delay after delay. After all, it's not often one of the most successful iOS game franchises has such an eagerly-anticipated game waiting in the wings that they just can't seem to get to market. Now, we have word from Epic Games we shouldn't hold our breath for the release of what certainly looked like another great chapter in the Infinity Blade saga.
One of the coolest things I saw at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this year was the Rift, virtual reality goggles from developers Oculus. Oculus takes the science of vision and applies it to virtual reality gaming in an arena that will be intimately familiar to any fan of iOS gaming.
Who doesn’t like a good side scrolling infinite runner? If you just raised your hand, this review probably won’t interest you. For those that are left, I’m afraid this game might not interest you. I appreciate that the developers felt they were doing something slightly different than the rest of the crowd, but frankly the game feels like a Robot Unicorn / Unicorn Dash knock-off with a horse riding, sword wielding demon. While in theory that sounds cool, in practice it comes off as a cheap second rate attempt at doing something that’s already been done much better. This may sound awfully harsh, but keep in mind we’re talking about a genre that already has plenty of entries.
