Moonbase for iPhone & iPod Touch

image

Simulation games have built up their reputation by using the indomitable freemium method, which allows users to play without paying a cent or optionally play by buying hundreds of dollars worth of in-game currency and upgrades.  Although some prefer not to invest in these casual time-wasters, the fact that they’re utterly fun is downright indisputable. Moonbase (free), the first title from South African-based development firm Maxxor, employs this powerful business model, and it’s undoubtedly got hours of fun packed in for any gamer.

What I played this week - Real life storm dodge and Wawa Land platforming fun!

image

This week, I played just one new game--a platformer called Wawa land... well, if you don't count driving in a real life superstorm! I had wanted to also check out Kindom Rush for iPhone (Eric reviewing the iPad version), but have not had the opportunity to reliably get back online to grab it. A monster storm tore through our area smashing houses, and slapping down trees and power lines like kiddy toys, leaving us with a few more important things to worry about! We happened to be driving home from a concert (with a side-trip to the local Taco Bell drive thru--long story) when the storm hit. I would have certainly rather been in Wawa Land than a wind-tunnel filled with water, lightning and debris.

Cuboid: 3D Puzzle Game App Review

image

The Cuboid app is an addicting 3D puzzle game available on your mobile device.  The game is played on a beautiful 3D scene with the object being to move your ‘cuboid’ from the first tile through to the goal as quickly as possible, and in as few moves as possible.  Depending on the amount of moves and the amount of time it takes you, you’ll get a score.  While it sounds simple enough, the game gets much more complex because of all the different items in the game which will either help you speed through the level or try to slow you down.

Apocalypse Knights App Review

image

Many times, the large amount of apps that are housed by Apple’s App Store can prove to be a bit daunting - especially considering that tons and tons of noteworthy applications slip under the majority of gamers’ radars only to face their App Store demises. Apocalypse Knights (free), a new game from InterServ International, is one of these titles. Not yet at its failing point, though, the hidden gem is definitely worth checking out.

With the amount of fun and potential to become a dominant App Store title, Apocalypse Knights poses you with defending yourself against onslaughts of deadly, demonic enemies that are out to kill you.

ION iCade Mobile is the intersection of Retro and the Future of Gaming

image
I've written before about the iCade retro arcade cabinet for the iPad, and again when I saw a preview of the mobile version for the iPhone and iPod touch, at the Consumer Electronics Show, but I've finally had a chance to play with that mobile version, and get some hands on time.

What I played this week - Carnivores, Album Flow 2 and other gaming news!

image

Check out the Featured App Store bundles if you haven't yet. Several of the best apps you will likely find on the app store, all nicely sorted into related bins can be had thus. Last night I found myself perusing the dinosaur related app/games bundle (under Game Collections), and of course there is a 3D FPS game in there called Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter that I couldn't resist. The game turned out to be a mere 74MB of totally cool, and immersive hunting of the prehistoric beasties, which ran just fine even on my old original iPad with it's old-school graphics! Also this week, played with the latest release of Album Flow (see previous review here), since the developer made some interesting tweaks to the new version. Album Flow brings Cover Flow to iPad (or now iPhone), in case you were wondering, but with some interesting new capabilities. More news from the gaming realm at the end--lot's to cover so let's jump in, shall we...?

Best iPhone Apps, iPad Apps, iPod Touch Apps | iPhone Life Magazine

We review the Best iPhone Apps, iPad Apps, and iPod Touch Apps.  Whether you want to play a game (like Chillingham Manor), navigate with GPS, or discover new apps, you can easily get lost.  There are so many on the market and the number is increasing on a daily basis.  So where to begin?  The following examples are just a few of what is out there.

The Head Finder is one of the iPhone apps around. It is a task management or schedule management that helps you organize all the different things you have to do.  It has a very simple user interface and it seems they designed all the most common functions to be done with as little tapping and typing as possible which is a real time saver.  Several time management apps, in the past, have seemed to waste more time entering events and tasks into the app than you might save by being more organized.  With Head Finder you can have a new task entered in less than thirty seconds with their quick three tap process to create a reminder.

Another one of the best Iphone apps we've seen is The JumiCam. This app allows you to view streaming video from any web cam you want with ease.  It's easy to set up the software on your PC and then connect your phone to see what's going on at your house.  The JumiCam also works very well on either a 3G connection or WiFi. This app allows you to connect to as many different web cams as you want so you can monitor your entire house while you're away if you want.  It can really take the place of an entire security service if you wanted it to.  There are many ways to use this, from keeping an eye on a babysitter while you're out on a date to making sure your pet is safe at home while you're at work.

As the name describes, U.S. Traveller is made for travelers that call the United States their home and travel to countries outside their own. In opening the iPhone app, on the "Countries" tab, you are presented with a list of countries & their correlating flags. The added flags next to the country names are a nice touch, especially since most people can quickly find a country based on visual representation versus textual representation. You can travel from the U.S. to numerous countries - Chile, Argentina, Germany & Italy to name a few. This may not adequately prepare you for the countries you visit, but this will for sure help you. The amount of information and the ease of access it gives to people is incredibly invaluable.
