I've seen a number of lists of apps recommended for those lucky individuals who got a new iPhone or iPad from Santa, but CNET's listing strikes me as being the most useful. They include a number of free apps that are my favorites and that I use every day. Let's take a look at some of their recommended apps.
Flipboard — This is likely the most popular aggregator of news and content ever developed for iOS devices. Its interface is gorgeous and intuitive, and very easy to customize to your interests. Many people find it to be their favorite window onto Facebook or news or entertainment or sports, or whatever your interest is.
Google Maps — When Apple dumped Google Maps in favor of its own maps solution, many were disappointed that Apple's effort was missing some of their favorite features, such as transit directions and Google Street View. Fortunately, Google eventually came out with a full-featured version of their app for iOS devices that has almost all the functionality of their highly popular maps app for Android devices.
If you're a photographer who loves finding new and beautiful locations for a photo shoot, this is the perfect app for you. Pashadelic is a crowd sourcing app where people can post pictures they have taken with GPS location attached. With this information you can visit the same area to take photos of the same scenery. There are over 20,000 existing photo locations already in the app, and it's growing all the time.
Happy Holidays everyone, from all of us here at iPhone Life! Hopefully everyone had a safe and abundant holiday celebration. I know many of you are now very happy owners of the latest iDevices, and whether you just got an iPhone, an iPad or an iPad mini, this little "Buyer's Guide" is filled with handy links with lots of concise and useful information to help you accessorize and personalize your new toys.
If you're looking for a fun and educational app for you or your children this Christmas, Jolly Jingle might be just the one. This app is designed to help people learn some of the most popular Christmas songs around, but it really goes a step beyond that for children. Kids will enjoy listening to and learning their favorite Christmas tunes, but while learning the songs they will also be practicing their reading skill!
Two awesome 99 cent titles this week, and likely my last WIPTW article of 2012, so a happy holidays to everyone, and here is hoping you have a great new year in 2013! Starbase Gunship is a new game from Capital j Media. A stationary 3D shooting game that puts you at the center of the action as enemy ships and incoming weapons head toward your base station. Blasting through and surviving enemy waves will allow you to build up enough creds to update your base firepower and protection levels. Angry Birds Space HD is pig busting in zero-G, and like every other Angry Birds (all of which are currently on sale), powerfully addictive.
Got to love the holiday sales, right? In the spirit of the season, several vendors are proving their "non-Scrooge-iness" by offering up reduced pricing and FREE apps to close out 2012! But some only appear to be free, so FREE buyer beware! First up, you can grab great Activision re-styled classics like Pitfall (uh, TOTALLY FREE), Guitar Hero ($1.99), Call of Duty: Zombies ($1.99) and more great games at reduced prices (search App store for Activision). You can also grab a slew of cool games like Shoot the Zombirds (FREE) from Infinite Dreams, iQuarium HD (99 cents), and Jelly Defense (99 cents), plus several more low-priced titles. While you are up in the App store nabbing these great games, you might check out Sleigher and Ears the Astronaut, both pseudo-FREEBIES that I must now sadly report require in-app purchases to advance, which RUINS FREE, IMO (and must now pull from my review queue)...
To celebrate the holiday season many top apps are now on sale for a limited time. Read on to find out which popular apps have had their prices slashed! Great apps that are sure to be on your holiday wish list or gift list are on sale now.
Cinema Trix is a fun app which allows you to add filters and other effects to your device’s camera while you’re shooting video or still images. Unlike many other apps, you can use this one to look through your camera at the world as you want it to be. The augmented reality features allows you to feel like you’re in the matrix or some other exciting world. It’s also great for making fun and interesting videos which are altered in a wide range of ways.
I previously reviewed Battle Fleet from Capital j Media--a unique iOS naval strategy game--and so was stoked to check out their new game, Starbase Gunship, which just went live (you can grab it now for intro price of 99 cents)! The game requires you to play the 3-D space gunner lucky enough to be on duty just as waves of incoming ships, missiles, etc. careen towards your home station. I'll post up a full review later, but you can check out the trailer above to get the idea...
I am constantly amazed by the advancements in graphics and gaming in the iOS world, and Real Boxing is the latest example. From the colorized red, black, and white cinematic 'cut scenes' reminiscent of Frank Miller's Sin City, to the photorealistic gameplay, the experience is breathtaking.
Best iPhone Apps, iPad Apps, iPod Touch Apps | iPhone Life Magazine
We review the Best iPhone Apps, iPad Apps, and iPod Touch Apps. Whether you want to play a game (like Chillingham Manor), navigate with GPS, or discover new apps, you can easily get lost. There are so many on the market and the number is increasing on a daily basis. So where to begin? The following examples are just a few of what is out there.
The Head Finder is one of the iPhone apps around. It is a task management or schedule management that helps you organize all the different things you have to do. It has a very simple user interface and it seems they designed all the most common functions to be done with as little tapping and typing as possible which is a real time saver. Several time management apps, in the past, have seemed to waste more time entering events and tasks into the app than you might save by being more organized. With Head Finder you can have a new task entered in less than thirty seconds with their quick three tap process to create a reminder.
Another one of the best Iphone apps we've seen is The JumiCam. This app allows you to view streaming video from any web cam you want with ease. It's easy to set up the software on your PC and then connect your phone to see what's going on at your house. The JumiCam also works very well on either a 3G connection or WiFi. This app allows you to connect to as many different web cams as you want so you can monitor your entire house while you're away if you want. It can really take the place of an entire security service if you wanted it to. There are many ways to use this, from keeping an eye on a babysitter while you're out on a date to making sure your pet is safe at home while you're at work.
As the name describes, U.S. Traveller is made for travelers that call the United States their home and travel to countries outside their own. In opening the iPhone app, on the "Countries" tab, you are presented with a list of countries & their correlating flags. The added flags next to the country names are a nice touch, especially since most people can quickly find a country based on visual representation versus textual representation. You can travel from the U.S. to numerous countries - Chile, Argentina, Germany & Italy to name a few. This may not adequately prepare you for the countries you visit, but this will for sure help you. The amount of information and the ease of access it gives to people is incredibly invaluable.
