Awesome New and Updated Games: Heroes & Castles, MX Offroad and Letter by Letter.

image

Welcome to my roundup of some of the best new (and updated) iOS games! This week we'll take a look at the uniquely genre-defying greatness that is Heroes and Castles, the adrenaline-fueled racing madness of 2XL MX Offroad and the refreshing word puzzlement of Letter by Letter.

What I played this week - Noble Nutlings and Pinball Arcade!

image

Some ex-Rovio gamemakers teamed up under the Boomlagoon banner to create another 2-D physics game--a platform scrolling game called Noble Nutlings. The free game is hugely fun and probably destined for gaming success! The other game I tried out this week is Pinball Arcade. Electronic Pinball is to iPad what jelly is to peanut butter, and the easy touch and robust graphics of iPad make almost any 3-D pinball game just plain awesome! Pinball Arcade is one of the most authentic recreations I have seen done on any hardware. Too bad the freebie lite mode times you out and charges you to buy tables, but well, developers gotta eat too... and the lifelike tables are easily worth the price!

Listen Up! lite iPhone App Review

image

Listen Up! Is a great audio game which takes turn based games to the next level.  While there have been dozens of new games over the past year where people have to draw clues or guess letters to find the answer to the question, Listen Up uses audio recordings to make the game play even more fun and interactive.

Oh what a Tangled web we weave... And what fun!

As a kid, I didn't play Cats in the Cradle much... But I did play it a little bit. If you're note familiar with the game, one person holds some string or a rubber band in their fingers and the next person interacts with it and so on. It's more than a game, because you're learning problem solving skills, not to mention physics and geometry!

App Review - Get Happy – Ways to Increase Your Happiness

image

The Get Happy app was designed by a practicing clinical psychologist to give its users useful tips and advice to help them improve their overall happiness in their life.  This is done using evidence-based advice known to be effective for a wide range of different people.  As you get the advice each day you can rate it on how well it applies to your specific life so that the app can better tailor future tips to you.  While this app cannot replace the advice of a professional therapist, it does a great job at giving you small reminders to keep working on the improvement of your life.

IK Multimedia iRig HD - Rocks CES awards!

image

I was able to rock out loud at CES on the new iRig HD connected to an iPad (also connected to their new Bluetooth speaker--the iLoud), but that's not the point of this post. You can get more great CES coverage in the next issue of iPhoneLife (so if you haven't yet subscribed, hurry), and to say IK Multimedia rocked the show is putting it mildly. No other show vendor comes close to showcasing the latest (and coolest) iOS music gadgets like these guys! The iRig HD was a Best in Show Winner at CES--more booth pix follow with a PR announcement about the new HD model...

Water Cycles for iPhone & iPad

image

The water cycles app is an entertaining game where you have to help guide the water from the mountains out to the sea using different pieces along the way.  The game gets challenging because you have to also bring the water to different towns, villages and cities to use before it finally makes its way to the sea.  Still not hard enough?  Well, when the water goes through the different cities it will get polluted, and you need to filter it to make it clean again before finally bringing it to the sea.

App Review - SYSTEM UTIL Dashboard

image

System Util Dashboard is an app which is designed to help you better understand how your mobile device is working at any given moment.  It will provide you with detailed information about a wide range of different things going on in your device, and tips on how to improve the overall performance.  The app is set up in a very easy to understand and read format which makes this information understandable to people whether they have a lot of technical experience, or are just casual users.

The app will provide you with useful information in the following areas:

Best of CES 2013: Waterproof Cases

image

I just got back from the amazing and spectacular event that was 2013’s Consumer Electronics Show. I had a blast, it was a great time with great people. Nonetheless, I'm a country boy at heart, and it's nice to be back in the rugged wilderness (relatively speaking) that is Sedona Arizona.

If you follow my iPhone Life magazine articles and blog postings then you already know a bit about me. I'm an enthusiast of all things outdoorsy, rugged and environmentally friendly. That said, there was certainly no shortage of amazing new iOS gadgets and gear that could make valid claims of meeting the rigorous IP and MIL-STD-810 military-grade standards, that were being presented at this years CES. Read on for a sampling of some of my favorites in the category of heavy-duty, rugged and durable accessories. Trust me when I say, we have a lot to look forward to, in this category, this year.

Meetup at CES - FinderCodes and FedEx get your gear back!

image

FinderCodes  is an electronic lost/found exchange (see my review here) that helps you get back your lost gear. A 2013 CES award winner, you use the service to mark and register your stuff in the cloud (with tags) so that should someone find it, they can scan the QR code on the tag and easily and privately return your stuff (and collect a reward you offer). The cloud system tracks and alerts you as well. I met with Blake Sohn, the founder of FC at CES 2013 in Las Vegas, NV, and he discussed the latest partnership with FedEx (also giving me a quick demo of the new return features), and what is next on the horizon for this up and coming mobile service brand.

Best iPhone Apps, iPad Apps, iPod Touch Apps | iPhone Life Magazine

We review the Best iPhone Apps, iPad Apps, and iPod Touch Apps.  Whether you want to play a game (like Chillingham Manor), navigate with GPS, or discover new apps, you can easily get lost.  There are so many on the market and the number is increasing on a daily basis.  So where to begin?  The following examples are just a few of what is out there.

The Head Finder is one of the iPhone apps around. It is a task management or schedule management that helps you organize all the different things you have to do.  It has a very simple user interface and it seems they designed all the most common functions to be done with as little tapping and typing as possible which is a real time saver.  Several time management apps, in the past, have seemed to waste more time entering events and tasks into the app than you might save by being more organized.  With Head Finder you can have a new task entered in less than thirty seconds with their quick three tap process to create a reminder.

Another one of the best Iphone apps we've seen is The JumiCam. This app allows you to view streaming video from any web cam you want with ease.  It's easy to set up the software on your PC and then connect your phone to see what's going on at your house.  The JumiCam also works very well on either a 3G connection or WiFi. This app allows you to connect to as many different web cams as you want so you can monitor your entire house while you're away if you want.  It can really take the place of an entire security service if you wanted it to.  There are many ways to use this, from keeping an eye on a babysitter while you're out on a date to making sure your pet is safe at home while you're at work.

As the name describes, U.S. Traveller is made for travelers that call the United States their home and travel to countries outside their own. In opening the iPhone app, on the "Countries" tab, you are presented with a list of countries & their correlating flags. The added flags next to the country names are a nice touch, especially since most people can quickly find a country based on visual representation versus textual representation. You can travel from the U.S. to numerous countries - Chile, Argentina, Germany & Italy to name a few. This may not adequately prepare you for the countries you visit, but this will for sure help you. The amount of information and the ease of access it gives to people is incredibly invaluable.
