Over the years I have met many people who find much of the newest technology intimidating. Many seniors find it challenging, mind boggling, and sometimes outright incomprehensible. Take the smartphone. Just looking at it is distressing for some people. Their initial reaction is to steer away from such devices, but it doesn’t have to be that way.
Halloween is upon us, and among other things, that means it’s time for my annual roundup of some of the spookiest iOS games in the App Store. Trust me on this, these games are not for the faint of heart; many of them carry the App Store’s 17+ rating for mature themes and graphic violence. If you are looking for creepy games that may scare your pants off and set your adrenaline flying off the charts, read on to learn about some of the more disturbing games on the iOS platform.

I like apps that are open ended enough to adapt to the user's personality. Proposition is one such app. If you are a professional, by the book, no nonsense kind of person then Proposition could reflect that. If you are a prankster, happy go-lucky adventurous risk-taking type, then you will find Proposition will match that. It's almost a psychological test of your personality. Basically, Proposition is like Truth or Dare, with emphasis on the Dare part, and leveraging social networking and mobile technology.
EDUMOTION's Stop Motion- Animation Pro is a remarkably easy-to-use application that puts the power of stop-motion filming in its users’ hands. With Stop Motion Animation Pro, no special equipment is necessary to create your very own stop-motion film. Stop- motion film is created by playing many still frames in quick succession, in which a scene has been subtly adjusted for each frame. This creates the illusion of smooth motion when using a series of inanimate scenes.
I guess after you play or review a few high-caliber 3D action games—particularly ones with fast, stunning graphics and sound—you sort of become numb to similarly fantastic, over-the-top games. You overdose on them, or at least I do. You need to cleanse the palette, as it were. Eventually along will come a simple game, completely out of nowhere. No fancy 3D engine, shaders, or blazing polygon models. Just clever use of lighting, and in-game ambience that is so darn good, it is like discovering the wonder of your iPad for the first time. Type:Rider ($2.99) is exactly that kind of game.
The iTunes app store has amazing astronomy applications which show you the wonders of the universe. Check out these five apps that let you dive into the universe and explore the stars, planets, and other celestial objects in the space while standing on your rooftop with your iPhone in your hand.
Sleep. Medical research indicates that your body needs it to repair and rejuvenate, but more importantly, an unhealthy sleep condition (like Apnea), can lead to a heart attack and possibly death. You may not even know you are suffering from it, but sleep problems are not the only hidden health dangers we face. If you sit at a desk all day, recent studies indicate this could also contribute to an unhealthy condition. Enter 24/7, an app that evaluates your sleep quality, keeps tabs on your daily activity, and helps you to keep moving in a positive direction, potentially away from a hospital visit.
Mobile document scanning and OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is a great example of the fusion and evolution of technology. What used to require a bulky scanner and special desktop software, almost any smartphone with a camera can now do. There are several apps in the App store (SmartScan+OCR ($3.99), Perfect OCR ($3.99), etc.), that allow you to scan and recognize printed text and images, but Prizmo ($9.99) is a scanner application for iOS that takes it one step further. It will attempt to detect and then segment these captured areas out as separate document fields, preserving the formats (image sections vs. text), translating the results into multiple languages, and even reading them out to you! Prizmo makes it easy for you to arrange and share them as needed, and is also a great business card or image scanner.
Congratulations to America’s team Oracle, who just won the prestigious America’s Cup sailing race in an absolutely thrilling finish. Not only did Team USA win against fierce competition from the Kiwis, they did so in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. To come back from being down 8 - 1 in a contest where the first one to 9 wins is unheard of. Not to mention having to overcome the adversity of a crew member dying during training and a major cheating scandal that gave them a two-race penalty.
The sailing that took place in the San Francisco Bay was one of the most exciting stories of perseverance, aggressive competition, and strategic gamesmanship that the world has seen in quite some time. And all the while I was able to track the progress with the free, interactive America’s Cup iOS app. The app kept me abreast of all the latest developments in this thrilling saga, and also got me thinking about one of my all time favorite sailing and navigation apps out there, Boat Beacon ($9.99).
Best iPhone Apps, iPad Apps, iPod Touch Apps | iPhone Life Magazine
We review the Best iPhone Apps, iPad Apps, and iPod Touch Apps. Whether you want to play a game (like Chillingham Manor), navigate with GPS, or discover new apps, you can easily get lost. There are so many on the market and the number is increasing on a daily basis. So where to begin? The following examples are just a few of what is out there.
The Head Finder is one of the iPhone apps around. It is a task management or schedule management that helps you organize all the different things you have to do. It has a very simple user interface and it seems they designed all the most common functions to be done with as little tapping and typing as possible which is a real time saver. Several time management apps, in the past, have seemed to waste more time entering events and tasks into the app than you might save by being more organized. With Head Finder you can have a new task entered in less than thirty seconds with their quick three tap process to create a reminder.
Another one of the best Iphone apps we've seen is The JumiCam. This app allows you to view streaming video from any web cam you want with ease. It's easy to set up the software on your PC and then connect your phone to see what's going on at your house. The JumiCam also works very well on either a 3G connection or WiFi. This app allows you to connect to as many different web cams as you want so you can monitor your entire house while you're away if you want. It can really take the place of an entire security service if you wanted it to. There are many ways to use this, from keeping an eye on a babysitter while you're out on a date to making sure your pet is safe at home while you're at work.
As the name describes, U.S. Traveller is made for travelers that call the United States their home and travel to countries outside their own. In opening the iPhone app, on the "Countries" tab, you are presented with a list of countries & their correlating flags. The added flags next to the country names are a nice touch, especially since most people can quickly find a country based on visual representation versus textual representation. You can travel from the U.S. to numerous countries - Chile, Argentina, Germany & Italy to name a few. This may not adequately prepare you for the countries you visit, but this will for sure help you. The amount of information and the ease of access it gives to people is incredibly invaluable.
