Learn and play today with Piano Apprentice from ION Audio

image
I never had a piano lesson, even though we had a piano in the house, growing up. That piano collected dust and was more useful as a piece of furniture to display picture frames on. I always wished I had more initiative and learned to play. But today, thanks to the magic that is the Piano Apprentice from ION Audio, I actually learned how to play the melody from The Entertainer! And it just took about 30 minutes! The Piano Apprentice is a creative combination of a physical piano keyboard, and a free app with several lessons included, and tight integration between the software and hardware.

TabletClaw helps you get a grip on your iPad

image
The iPad is great, but even after three generations, it's hard to grip. It really could benefit from a handle. So I was excited to see the TabletClaw, an innovative multipurpose solution for gripping your tablet as well as propping it up.

The TabletClaw is made of rubber and hard plastic, made in the USA by the way, in a portable package designed to slide on to most tablets, not just the iPad 2 and new iPad.

GoSmart Stylus Review

image

The GoSmart is really not the typical stylus your grandfather used (though it might resemble a sort of drafting instrument). It is substantially more, in point of fact. An ingenious twist of simple engineering applied to the challenge of drawing or writing on the iPad screen in a natural, tactile manner. As a former weather guy, I used to spend hours hunched over first paper charts (waaay back) and then later a computer screen/drawing tablet... mostly just drawing lines (always lines of equal something or other). In the bad old days, drawing on a computer screen was an act more akin to connecting the dots using a drawing puck (on a tablet surface), and the whole experience was frustrating, jerky, often producing an erroneous result. If I would have had an iPad and a GoSmart stylus, I would have relished the task! It might have helped me forecast the weather better as well--ok, joking aside, the GoSmart is a stylus worthy of it's name...read on to learn why you will want this one.

Weekly Recap: Current iOS News In Review.

image

Welcome to my weekly recap here at iPhone Life. Each week I take a look back at some of the top stories in the world of iOS that made headlines.

This week's newsmakers include:

*The Dark Knight Rises, the iOS game.

*A new iPod touch on the horizon, plus much, much more.

*Apple presents for the first time at the annual Black Hat security conference.

*An oxymoron: Apple’s disappointing, yet stellar, financial quarter.

*We already knew he was the man. Time magazine recognizes Steve Jobs as one of the top 20 most influential Americans.

Weekly App Review - Utility Roundup and Chrome Shakedown!

image

Was able to check out 3 new handy utilities this week, and the new so-called Chrome for iOS browser, which is the Safari engine in a Chrome-like wrapper with a few added features that help if you are already drinking the Goog kool-aid. I have come to rely heavily on Safari, and IMO, Chrome mobile did not impress at all. About the only thing I liked was being able to get to my bookmarks, but it performed too chaotically to be useful. Also in this post, I cover some handy lightweight remote control apps (PC HUD and OFF) that let you monitor, stop or restart a PC or Mac from your iDevice, and a really decent calc/notepad app (CalcTape) for running accounting tallies and similar number-crunching tasks. As a bonus, I'll round up 3 of my fav free utilities at the end! Perfect end to a review roundup...

Two HDMI to VGA solutions, for Apple TV and more

image
For a long time now, I have lamented the absence of a solution for converting HDMI to VGA, so I could project from my Apple TV or from an iPad using Apple's HDMI cable instead of their VGA cable. Why? Primarily because the VGA cable does not allow a way to charge the iPad when in use, whereas the HDMI version has a 30 pin female connector so you can plug in a syncing cable. Additionally, since most office projectors accept VGA, not HDMI, this has been the missing link for many professionals. As they say, when it rains, it pours. In recent weeks, I've received two such devices that convert HDMI to VGA and they each have their pros and cons.

The Dark Night...

image

I was going to write an enthusiastic review of the new iOS game The Dark Knight Rises. I'll share that with you at another time.

In light of the recent theater massacre, I'd like to offer a moment of virtual silence, in a forum usually devoted to words. My heart extends towards all of you affected by the recent events in Colorado, and I offer my prayers to the families of everyone involved. May eveyone find solace, may everyone find peace.

Keep your iPhone and iPod locked up this summer with LOKSAK

My brother-in-law is constantly dropping his phone in lakes, ponds, pools, etc. Fortunately, he only uses cheap, easily replaceable 'feature phones' but for those of us who care about keeping our smartphones dry, there's LOKSAK.

iPad Reviews, News, Tips and Tricks

Searching for the best iPad reviews, news or tips and tricks on accessories, apps, gadgets and more is just as important as figuring which apple product you should get in the first place. iPad reviews and news on different products allow you to make a more conscientious decision, but where should you look.  Here at iPhone Life Magazine we work towards answering these very questions.  This page is dedicated to iPad reviews, news, tips and tricks.  This is just one example of a review that we have online (The Green Figure iHolder iPad Stand).

Another great thing about doing research is that sometimes you will find something that you weren't looking for and that can help you.  For example, our page on The Best of 2011 shows our reviews for some of the best products that came out this past year.  This link gives you just a taste of some of the concrete examples of reviews that we do.

Now, the iPad 2 has been around for several months and there have been several companies that have based themselves around the needs of this tablet.  However, it is still a competitive world in the market of accessories.  Anyone could be easily overwhelmed by all the available stands, apps, cases or any of the other niche markets.  We would definitely recommend doing some research and checking out some iPad reviews to get an idea of whats available and how you are going to use your device. The market has several options to choose from today.

Such examples as IK Multimedia, have been on a roll lately, with a slew of hardware and software products tailored for amateur and prosumer musicians. Whether its stands and clips for iPhones and iPads or multitrack recording and sampling software for the iOS platform, IK has been expanding their catalog at a prodigious rate. Their latest releases include a MIDI hardware connector for the iOS platform, a sound sampler app and a iPad version of their popular VocaLive software. These iPad reviews will take a closer look at each.

Whatever you may be searching for, we too are looking for answers and want to help you find them.
