There was a time when “playing bat and ball” meant your kids were probably out getting a bit of exercise. Nowadays it could simply indicate that they are sampling the latest variant of the classic Arkanoid. Mechanics wise there’s no question that Magic Orbz pays homage to such games of old, but the environments and some of the power ups really give it a fresh feel. Don’t get too laid back while you’re playing, though, or the challenge of the last level set will really smack you in the face.
Sometimes a simple maze game where the main goal is just to get out of each level can actually be entertaining, as long as the game is constructed well. My big concern with Little Labyrinths was that it was going to be too easy since you basically trace your way out of each maze with your finger. It turns out that with the right game play mode this is not only challenging but can get quite addicting. Thankfully Little Labyrinths has 6 game play modes to choose from, and in the right combination these can be rather rewarding. Just make sure that you have a “big kid’s” game to quickly switch to when someone wants to know what you’re doing.
Looking for virtual wintertime fun this holiday, check out Ice Riders or Snow Fight (reviewed last winter season on my blog here), both from Sauce Digital. Ice Riders is a simple way to practice snowboarding tricks without breaking major bones, and as a bonus, you design the course! Snow Fight is soon to get an update, so you might wait a bit before grabbing that one. Both are great time killers for the days when you wish you could be out there on the slopes, instead of, well, stuck inside playing games!!.... Read on for the full PR!
Boulder Dash is an interesting game which is simple in concept, but difficult to master. The idea of the game is not new in that you’re controlling a character in a 2D world where you have to find gems by walking through an underground area. You can dig through sand to explore new areas, push round rocks to crush enemies or allow you to get to the other side of them. There are other tops of rocks which you can’t dig through so you’ll have to explore your way around them.
This week I played 3 awesomely cool games at the $1.99 level and below...Galactic Phantasy Prelude is a space shooter RPG in the same class of game as Galaxy on Fire 2 (SD version recently went free and hit #1 in nine countries). Atomic Frogs, a physics puzzler that requires deft timing and aim to launch your frogs through the various obstacles. Last is a free to play shooter called Dead Trigger, which brings the joy of shredding Zombies to iPad in exquisitely detailed apocalyptic strokes. So, without further adieu, let the WIPTW game review madness commence!....
Aggro Cubes is a fun game app which is getting extremely popular because of its simple, yet fun game play. The object of the game is to make the red cubes fall off of a platform while keeping as many of the other cubes safe as possible. There are a variety of different things you can do to make the red cubes fly off ranging from popping cubes off, expand and explode them and much much more. As you progress through the game you’ll gain access to additional methods you can use to help you fly through the different levels.
Around the time that Earn To Die came out it seemed like several such games came onto the App Store. I tried some of the other ones as well, and for some reason this one seemed to catch my attention the most. The concept as a whole is fairly redundant: race until you run out of gas, upgrade your vehicle and repeat. Still, Earn To Die has managed to suck me in every time I load it up, and as far as I'm concerned that's the most important feature a game should have.
If you're a fan of the hit TV show Scrubs, and hate the fact that you won't be able to find any new episodes, you'll be happy to learn of this great app from HeroCraft Ltd. This is the official Scrubs mobile game which brings you the comedy and fun of your favorite television show. Some people might be concerned about the fact that most of the time when you find a game based on a TV show it isn't very fun and the game makers simply rely on the name recognition of the show to make sales. That is not the case with the Scrubs app.
