iPads in the Classroom

image

I've never worked on a Mac. I don't even own an iPhone. But one night four months ago, I borrowed an iPad from our Technology Department to see what all the fuss was about. As a baseball coach and sponsor of our school's broadcasting club, I thought the iPad might be useful for video analysis and editing. And it is. What I never expected was to find so many practical functions for my classroom. The iPad has changed the way I teach high school English, and there’s a pretty good chance it can change the way you teach, too.

Bam! Jr. App Review

image

If you've been looking for a game that will keep the kids occupied; then Bam! Jr. is what you have been looking for.  This particular game is fast paced, practicing colors, and really stimulates the brain with optical illusions.  In other words, you have to be pretty quick to win this game.  So, what is the overall object?

Deluxe Moon HD App Review

There are many different things to learn and see with Deluxe Moon HD.  In fact, if you are unfamiliar with astrology and the moon phases; the initial page might be a bit confusing!  But, this doesn't take away from the very cool effects that it provides.  So, what exactly is the purpose of this app?

Vikersund Ski Flying App Review

image

The Vikersund ski flying app is a simple game where you play as a skier who is attempting a ski jump.  You tap to begin skiing down the hill and at the right moment you tap the screen to jump.  The goal is to get as far as possible during your jump.  You can play either single player or against someone.  Single player you have to beat scores which are computer generated, of course for multi-player you are going against your friend.

The iPhone and iPad have been extremely popular for a number of things since they came out but one thing which has been surprising by many is how many great educational uses there is for them.  One type of education app which many people might never know about is those which are designed for very young children.  The music color app is designed to not only help little kids learn their colors but also get a great appreciation for music.  The app is set up with large panels of different colors for little kids to choose and interact with in a simple way.

App Review - TWIG Touch Dictionary!

image

Among the first apps I reviewed when I started blogging at iPhoneLife way back in 2008 (ages ago, I know) was a dictionary app--Webster's Collegiate (here for the review) from Paragon--and the basic concept then for finding word information was much like the TWIG Touch Dictionary for iPad now. You would start by typing a word into a search box, which would ultimately result in informative word results appearing. The similarities end there however, as to contrast that early app version of Webster's (while effective) with TWIG would be like comparing a Fiat to a Ferrari. The TWIG Touch Dictionary is truly an app worthy of iPad. It's clever use of a mind map-based interface and touch manipulation is stunning, both in terms of innovative design and elegance.

iPhone App Developer Account: Why You Should Set-up Your Own

image

This blog post was originally written by one of my developers and I thought I would share it with the iPhone Life community, especially those interested in developing their own apps.  For those that are thinking about developing an app, make sure that you create your own developer account for $99 and don't simply use the account of whatever company you choose to develop your app - see below for the main reasons why.

Stone Age App Review

image

The Stone Age game is a fairly straight forward game with a top down view where you control a cave man who is out hunting for meat.  On the iPhone the controls are fairly simple with moving is done by tilting the device left or right.  Attacking is done by simply tapping the screen where you want to throw a club and defense works by swiping a finger across the screen.
