What I played this week - Trigger Fist and Flight!

image

This week, I played 2 great games that are very different, but both great fun. Trigger Fist is a combat game that you will both love and hate. Hate it because like real combat, it's so easy to get killed, but love it because it's so freaking cool!! Cool enough to warrant an iPhoneLife video demo, also included in this review. The other game I played the week, Flight, is a simple 2D-scroller recreating the fun and nostalgia of paper airplane flight.

What's Next? You Ain't Seen Nuthin' Yet... [on the evolution of Apple]

image

With all the chatter in the blogosphere, about new products soon to be released, and patent battles being fought on all fronts in the courts of law, I think it's important to keep in mind the old expression: "You ain't seen nuthin' yet!" Truly, hasn't this week been a great example of that.

With the court cases bringing out details Apple would just as likely have preferred to keep private, we have been granted a rare insight into the evolution of products in the Apple iDevice chain, as well as having been given glimpses into what Apple had in mind, in prototype form, two years ago.

That said, can you imagine what Cupertino has in store for us in say, 5 years? That's not that long. Think about it. Within 5 years, devices and functions that are now, only in prototype/patent form, may very well be seeing the light of day. It's not for nothing that Johny Ive says that the products Apple is working on now, are some of the best, most exciting products Apple has ever invented!

BroadwayBarks for iPad

image

Children’s stories have changed quite a bit since the invention of mobile devices. This unique book, called Broadway Barks, is no exception. The app brings children much more than just a story to read before bedtime. It can bring those interactive activities, colorful illustrations, assisted reading, and more importantly, an educational experience. Your children will never get bored with this story or the app that it is part of. The story itself is based off of real issues in today’s society, and by reading it children will be brought up to speed on some of the important things that they never learn about in school.

Save memory, and money with i-Flashdrive from PhotoFast

image
As a matter of principle, I try not to buy the higher memory configurations of iPhones and iPads. It doesn't seem right to charge an extra $100 for 16GB or even 32GB of additional memory, considering SD cards sell for a fraction of that amount. But I do find myself running out of memory, especially when it comes to videos and music. Fortunately, PhotoFast has a low cost, reliable solution. The i-FlashDrive is a USB flash drive with a 30 pin connector on the opposite end. You can plug the USB end into your computer and copy files in either direction.

Trigger Fist released - GET IT!!

This game in a word, ROCKS!! Just released today, Trigger Fist, an awesomely smooth shooter with lifelike combat sights and sounds, is available now on the Apple App Store for $4.99. Built with the Unity3D engine, TF is likely to become one of the hottest games you grab this year! The combat action is intense, if you survive long enough to appreciate it, that is. Review coming soon, but do yourself a favor, and grab this game NOW!

Get Flight free this week!

Will post a review up soon, but wanted to get the word out that you can grab the iOS port of Flight for free (limited time only this week), a formerly flash-based 2D paper airplane game recently added to the app store here. Throw your paper airplane, collecting stars and power-ups which earn you upgrades and enhancements, while trying to eke out an even longer glide. The game has been redone with new visuals and enhancements, and I can vouch already it's a lot of simple fun... grab it while it's still gratis for a limited time!

Drum Fanatics for iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch

image

Finally! An awesome new handheld game for drum lovers!  Drum Fanatics is a new app for your iPhone, iPod or iPad that allows you to get your drum addiction in even when you are away from your drum set. Or if you’re looking to start learning the rhythm of drums but don’t have a set yet, this is a fun easy way to start!  This drum game uses your fingers in a five line music rhythm system so you can rock out to your favorite songs.

GradeBook Pro - Teachers will love this!

image

I can’t begin to list all the features of this app on this review, so please go to the iTunes store to see them all. However, I can tell you what I like about GradeBook Pro. Although it's a full-featured grade book, it’s amazingly simple to use. Within a few minutes from downloading the app, I had created a class, added three “students,” created some assignments, set up weighted grades, and taken attendance. For an app this complicated, I was amazed at how simple it is to use.

Algebra Touch is Genius!

image

Algebra Touch is the perfect app for visual and kinesthetic learners. Here’s how it works. There are three stages: Explain, Practice and My Problems. In the Explain stage, you can either work your way through the lessons in order or select a lesson at random. Once you have chosen your lesson, you scroll through the instructions at the bottom of the screen and tap out your answers at the top. If you make a mistake, the problem won’t solve. If you’re right, you see the problem solve on the screen.

Looking for an iPad/Mac app for classroom record keeping

Does anyone know of an iPad app that integrates with the Mac to keep classroom records on students: grades, attendance, comments? I'll be teaching five classes this year and want to make the best use of my iPad. Any suggestions are appreciated.
