If you’ve been playing Minecraft, and had the thought one day, "Wow, I suddenly wish I had a gun and some ammo and could also run around shooting pixelated Zombies,” thenBlock Warfare: Zombies ($1.99) is definitely your app of the week! You can build blocky worlds to trudge around in, but for the sole purpose of defending them from advancing hoards of, well, block zombies.
Apple has two new fun and lively iPad commercials running on broadcast and cable networks. In each ad you see a rapid-fire series of words, each followed by a rapid display of specific apps. Its "Alive" spot, for example, includes the words awake, grow, shine, friend, Sunday, heart, flip, wave, and many more, so fast you hardly see them. It then pauses on "loud," followed by snippets of apps related to a sound, including AmpliTude and GarageBand. Then it repeats the same sequence with the words "deep" and "alive."
I have several games to report on this week, plus interesting news about the makers of Galaxy on Fire 2 releasing a mobile space shooter, MMORTS (Massive Multiplayer Online Real Time Strategy) game later this year. So let's get right to it!
First up is Trigger Fist (my favorite shooter of all time), which I finally got around to grabbing an expansion pack for. Second, I'll review an old emulation game called Gridlee, a game other blog sites say allows you to drop other game ROM files into and play, although I have not yet personally confirmed this. If true, the free Gridlee may have a short life in the app store as Apple frowns on emulators and may soon yank it. Third up is P.R.O.B.E., a free Sci-Fi board game I played, which has a synthed up computer voice. Last but not least is Versu, a just-released interactive story app, reminiscent of old-school adventure games.
Welcome back to my gaming reviews as I try out some of the best new iOS games!
Urban Dictionary defines epic fail as, "Complete and total failure when success should have been reasonably easy to attain." So I find it ironic that Epic Games' sure-fire hit, Infinity Blade: Dungeons has been beset with delay after delay. After all, it's not often one of the most successful iOS game franchises has such an eagerly-anticipated game waiting in the wings that they just can't seem to get to market. Now, we have word from Epic Games we shouldn't hold our breath for the release of what certainly looked like another great chapter in the Infinity Blade saga.
I often use my iPod touch for grabbing quick home recording tracks, and one of my favorite accessories used to be the Blue Mikey
from Blue Microphones. But when an Apple iOS update killed analog input, my original Mikey became a thing of the past.
The RØDE iXY
is a similar recording accessory, but is more specifically designed. While Blue makes great mics for music, RØDE is tailored to live broadcasting. The unique RØDE iXY can capture an outdoor live event or a basement recording jam at very high-quality sample rates!
The award-winning app, 1Password has recently been updated and rewritten from the ground up, and is now a stellar universal app, running beautifully across all Apple devices. In the wake of last week’s massive breach of Twitter security, where more than a quarter of a million users' accounts were hacked, now may be the perfect time to invest in your online security. This app takes the headache out of keeping track of all of your passwords.
If you're like me, the tax paperwork is trickling in, and you're compiling an envelope (or box!) full of receipts, payments, tax forms, etc., in preparation of tax day. Now might be the perfect time to make a New Year's resolution to scan and archive such paperwork.
With mobile gadgetry filling every niche in our lives, you would think we'd relegate pen-and-paper handwriting to the dustbin of bizarre things humans once did. Instead, we're inventing more sophisticated systems of conveyance for handwriting, such as with the Bluetooth Targus iNotebook, and why not? It has been our primary way of presenting ideas since the days of the first cave paintings, while electronic transcription methods are single-cell organisms by historical comparison. The Targus iNotebook proves we will not soon give up scratching out meaning on dead tree pulp, but in this case, it will track the etching, and connect it (via Bluetooth) to your iPad so you can scratch away and watch it "technologize" the results!
Zombie Master is a fun game that combines all the fun and strategy of StarCraft with the action of Gears of War together into one great game. As the name implies this game centers around hunting zombies, and keeping yourself alive. To conquer the game you need to gather items including minerals, gas and foods so you can build different buildings, create new units and upgrade them both to keep yourself strong.
