Radiul Doc holder needs you - Kickstarter for 10 more days!

Simple but effective idea considering most doc stands or holders are way too bulky to carry around, so if you want to help Radiul get full KS backing (and get one of these unique mobile doc holders), go here. For as little as a $30 pledge, you get a Radiul mobile. Hurry though, as the project only has 10 days to go (deadline, Friday, August 17, 2012) to reach the $14K needed... Made in U.S.A.!!

Drawing review roundup - Set Paint Go, Grafio, Illustrator and tips for an aging iPad

image

I recently reviewed a new stylus (see GoSmart review here), so figured I would swing back and repost on some of the drawing apps I used in the review. I also wanted to cover a unique "self-drawing" app created by Eric Hayes (an MIT math wiz and artist) called Set Paint Go. In this drawing roundup: Grafio, a very powerful diagramming and drawing toolset with a highly capable Lite version; Illustrator, another simple editor that can help you produce great looking graphics in like 2 seconds. I also have a few quick tips for when app crashes occur on older hardware, since I have been having some issues with an aging gadget...

Learn and play today with Piano Apprentice from ION Audio

image
I never had a piano lesson, even though we had a piano in the house, growing up. That piano collected dust and was more useful as a piece of furniture to display picture frames on. I always wished I had more initiative and learned to play. But today, thanks to the magic that is the Piano Apprentice from ION Audio, I actually learned how to play the melody from The Entertainer! And it just took about 30 minutes! The Piano Apprentice is a creative combination of a physical piano keyboard, and a free app with several lessons included, and tight integration between the software and hardware.

Three ways the Logitech Solar Powered K760 keyboard could be the best ever

image
It's always been a struggle for Apple peripheral vendors. They have to find a way to build a better mousetrap, so to speak, than Apple. Look at the Apple Magic Mouse for example, and notice that nobody has really even tried to build a better mouse for Macs. In the PC world, where mice and keyboards are almost an afterthought, it's easy for a vendor like Logitech to make better keyboards than what comes with the computer. But with Apple, their wired and wireless keyboard are built well and wouldn't be out of place in the Museum of Modern Art.

TabletClaw helps you get a grip on your iPad

image
The iPad is great, but even after three generations, it's hard to grip. It really could benefit from a handle. So I was excited to see the TabletClaw, an innovative multipurpose solution for gripping your tablet as well as propping it up.

The TabletClaw is made of rubber and hard plastic, made in the USA by the way, in a portable package designed to slide on to most tablets, not just the iPad 2 and new iPad.

GoSmart Stylus Review

image

The GoSmart is really not the typical stylus your grandfather used (though it might resemble a sort of drafting instrument). It is substantially more, in point of fact. An ingenious twist of simple engineering applied to the challenge of drawing or writing on the iPad screen in a natural, tactile manner. As a former weather guy, I used to spend hours hunched over first paper charts (waaay back) and then later a computer screen/drawing tablet... mostly just drawing lines (always lines of equal something or other). In the bad old days, drawing on a computer screen was an act more akin to connecting the dots using a drawing puck (on a tablet surface), and the whole experience was frustrating, jerky, often producing an erroneous result. If I would have had an iPad and a GoSmart stylus, I would have relished the task! It might have helped me forecast the weather better as well--ok, joking aside, the GoSmart is a stylus worthy of it's name...read on to learn why you will want this one.

Two HDMI to VGA solutions, for Apple TV and more

image
For a long time now, I have lamented the absence of a solution for converting HDMI to VGA, so I could project from my Apple TV or from an iPad using Apple's HDMI cable instead of their VGA cable. Why? Primarily because the VGA cable does not allow a way to charge the iPad when in use, whereas the HDMI version has a 30 pin female connector so you can plug in a syncing cable. Additionally, since most office projectors accept VGA, not HDMI, this has been the missing link for many professionals. As they say, when it rains, it pours. In recent weeks, I've received two such devices that convert HDMI to VGA and they each have their pros and cons.

New audio accessories are constantly evolving for all iOS devices, and starting earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), there were some great ones in action. Most prefer something compact, with good quality sound, and affordability. An integrated app is nice, but not crucial.

The Bose MIE2i wired mobile headset

are perfect examples of earbuds that are compact, have great sound quailty and are affordable. They are highly rated for both sound quality and comfort. They come with three sizes of StayHear silicon tips and an answer/end button on the inline microphone. The reviews say the quality of sound is tops. Note that these are standard earbuds - no noise-isolating to block unwanted sound.
A comparison of these earbuds and other great accessories are in the 2011 Best Gear article.
