Review: eBlocker Provides Invisible Protection and Security

Privacy and security is a hot topic, but most people don't know how to secure their desktop computers, laptops, and mobile devices. If you use PCs, Macs, Android, and iOS devices, each has its own software and settings to manage things like privacy and ad blocking. That's where the eBlocker Pro ($133.61). comes in.

The eBlocker is a plug-and-play device that sits between your internet connection and your router (or the eBlocker acts as a wireless router). The device is essentially a firewall that can be configured to block (or allow) what you want. The result is universal privacy, regardless of device, platform, or operating system, as there is no software to install.

Every device that connects through the eBlocker gains the privacy and security settings that you configure on the box, via a web page, using a friendly interface. The hardware is also simple and elegant hardware. Full disclosure, I had access to the pre-release version, based on the Raspberry Pi platform. The finished product looks much better. Even if you're not concerned about privacy, by blocking ads, you could boost your download speeds as you are downloading less content with every page view.

There are free alternatives, if you are tech savvy, and updates for this device are not free after first year. However, the eBlocker Pro (or the eBlocker Family, which allows parental controls, etc.) can be an easy way to lock down your devices.

Pros

  • Plug-and-play privacy
  • No software to install
  • Works will all of your devices
  • Simple, elegant hardware and software
  • Could boost speeds

Cons

  • Expensive versus free alternatives
  • Updates not free after first year

Final Verdict

If you are looking for a good privacy and security accessory, the eBlocker Pro from eBlocker should be high on your list.
