How do I enable and disable push notification alerts?

Many apps can receive messages and other data via push notifications. (Note that you have to be connected via Wi-Fi or a phone network to receive them.) You are made aware of these via sound and text alerts and “badges” (small colored objects in the upper right corner of an app icon that indicate the number of notifications received). Say you don’t want to be bothered by these notifications. You can turn any, or all of them off.

How do I restrict my child’s access to apps and content?

You can use the Restrictions feature to protect your child from unwanted content or to prevent someone you loan your device to from downloading apps and music. Here’s how you do it:


  1. Disable/Enable RestrictionsGo to Settings >General >Restrictions.

  2. Tap on “Enable Restrictions” at the top of the screen and the Set Passcode screen will pop up.

  3. Enter a 4-digit passcode and then re-enter it to confirm.

How do I speed up text entry with the built-in keyboard?

The iPad's version of the built-in software keyboard is relatively large and easy to use, but the iPhone/iPod touch version can be a bit challenging. Here are some things you can do to make text entry less demanding on all iOS devices.

  • Keyboard FeaturesThe keyboard customization features are turned on by default. You can check these at Settings >General >Keyboard. If they are not activated, turn on all of them. They include Auto-Capitalization, Auto-Correction, Check Spelling, Enable Caps Lock, and the "." Shortcut. Auto-Correction is particularly useful.

How do I adjust the brightness of my display to conserve power?

The brighter your screen, the easier it is to read… and the more battery power it consumes. To conserve power, you should experiment with brightness and set it to the lowest level you can comfortably work with.


To set the brightness level, go to the Settings >Brightness window and move the sliding bar to increase or decrease it. You can also activate Auto-Brightness from this window. When turned on, your iOS device uses the built-in ambient light sensor to adjust the screen brightness for current light conditions.

The Folder's feature was added to iOS 4.0 to make it easier for users to organize and find their apps quickly. For example, if someone loves games, they can create a "Games" folder and place all of their games in it. If they have a lot games, they can create folders for each type (Card Games, Puzzle Games, Racing Games, etc.).
