A Busy Baby Boomer's Life

A day in the life of a very busy baby boomer—and the apps that help her get things done.

Weather Channel MaxiNewsAlbert Einstein was once asked how many feet are in a mile. He answered, “I don’t know. Why should I fill my head with things like that when I could look them up in any reference book in two minutes?” Like Einstein, I’d rather not keep everything in my head either. Unlike Einstein, I don’t have to look it up in a book—I’ve got an iPhone in my pocket!

MerckTech Releases New iQuickText App!

You know how frustrating it can be to try to send that LOL or OMG reply one-handed. Why not add a whole library of quick text replies to your iPhone with iQuickText? Now you can stay engaged in the conversation, and finish that Big Mac without hesitation! Not that I am, ahem,  advocating eating and texting at the same time. I wish not to be held responsible for the dry-cleaning bill for removing mustard stains from your favorite jacket!

The one and only REAL iPhone Instant Messenger roundup

With the Push support in the iPhone OS 3, the iPhone has become an excellent platform for instant messaging.

Before the Push support, you could only keep them listening using hacks like Backgrounder on jailbroken devices or using clients that forced the entire phone remain “alive”. If Internet connectivity isn’t available or is too slow on your iPhone, you can send SMS text messages to Google to quickly get information like sports scores, weather, word definitions, driving directions, and more. To do this, send a text to GOOGLE (466453) and use one of the following search types:

  • Sports: score cubs
  • Movies: movies 90004
  • Stocks: stocks appl
  • Flight information: flight aa 500

There are many more search types. Do a Web search on “Google sms requests” to find more.

Send free text messages by e-mail

You can save money and send free text messages via e-mail on your iPhone or iPod touch. This is possible through SMS e-mail gateways, which are supported by most wireless carriers. The messages will arrive on a person’s phone just as a normal text message would. The address format for SMS e-mails is the phone number at (@) a particular carrier (e.g., 2125551212atmobile [dot] att [dot] net).
