Born to be Wild... About My iPhone!

The iPhone and third-party apps come in handy when you hit the road—on a motorcycle.

Traveling across America on a motorcycle is a fantastic way to see the country. My boyfriend and I have been doing this for twenty-seven years, and it’s been lots of fun. But, in the early years, it was sometimes a hassle. We were out of touch with family and friends until we found a pay phone, or mailed them postcards. I had to carry a disposable camera to capture photos of the places we visited, and then mail it home to have the pictures developed. And when I finally got one of the first cell phones, it and its charger were too big to carry with us. (Two people on a motorcycle, even a big one, leave little room for luxuries.)

Major corporations release free apps that make it easy to access their content

My favorite apps are those that make it easy to access Internet content and tools. As it turns out, major corporations are lining up to give you such apps—for free.

In this column, I’ll look at a number of these apps, including a multipurpose app from Yahoo, a number of apps from Amazon, and an ESPN app that makes it easy to get the latest scores. I’ll also cover apps that let you stream music, access travel guides, find information tailored to your location, and more. Much of this content is available via Safari, but a dedicated app is usually faster, more efficient, and easier to use. In addition, it often has special features that you can’t access with a browser.

Speed up Safari: clear its cache

Issue:

Safari - how to clear your cacheThe cache is used to store images and html documents for Web pages you have recently visited. It speeds up the loading of Web pages if you go back to a page you've already visited. The problem is that the amount of memory allocated for the cache is limited. If it is full and you go to a new Web site, it has to delete some of the existing files before it can save new ones. If Safari is loading games slowly or hanging up frequently, you may need to Clear is file cache.

Clear out the file cache, history, and cookies folder by going to Home >Settings >Safari.

Review: SwingALing by PocketMonkeyGames

image

First they took us to ancient Greece, then they thrust us in the middle of a war between the human / elf alliance and the Orcs (yeah, I know what story you’re thinking of). Get ready for their wildest adventure yet, as Pocket Monkey Games takes us deep into the heart of the jungle… to help an odd furry creature swing through the trees? You read that right. In Pocket Monkey’s latest game you help a cute little fuzzball with really long arms try and get as far as it can before it either misses a swing or gets stopped by other nasty forest dwellers. I like the simple, addictive premise, but overall the game feels a bit unfinished and doesn’t live up to Pocket Monkey Games standards.

A no-maintenance aquarium for fun and relaxation

I don’t usually “play” on my iPhone, but once in awhile, I find a “fun” app that gets my attention. MyReef 3D Aquarium is one of those apps.

Score with These Must-Have Soccer Apps!

Apps for soccer players, coaches, and fans!

Hey, soccer lovers! I searched the App Store and came up with my list of must-have soccer apps for the iPhone and iPod touch. Some of these apps, like Real Soccer and SoccerCard, are directly related to soccer. Others, like TVULite and Wunder Radio, are more general, allowing you to access a variety of content in addition to soccer. I enjoy watching soccer, have a good grasp on the basics, and am gaining a better understanding of the game’s intricacies. It’s true—I can’t bend it like Beckham, but I have no trouble spotting a great soccer app when I see it.

Getting the Most Out of iTunes

Use these desktop add-ons to automatically download cover art and lyrics

The desktop version of iTunes is a great application, with features that I’m still learning to use. In addition, there’s a world of add-ons and programs out there that make iTunes even better! I’ve just begun exploring these and wanted to share my comments about some of the best. Some of them are available for both the Mac and Windows PC; others are available for one platform only. Some are freeware and others commercial apps.

Going global with Vonage Mobile

image

With the introduction of the (free) Vonage Mobile app for the iPhone and Vonage Mobile for iPod Touch, the world might have just gotten a lot smaller.  I've been using Vonage since August 27 2005, well before the downturn in the economy, primarily because of growing dissatisfaction with traditional landlines service, customizability and cost.  For example, prior to the switch to Vonage, my monthly phone bill was constantly betweeen $90 and $150, primarily because of in-state toll calls and my wife calling family in Hungary.  It also irked me that call forwa

Using Voice Memos

Issue:

Voice MemosThis new app lets you create and save short voice recordings using the iPhone’s built-in microphone, the iPhone headset with mic, or third-party headsets certified to work with the iPhone. Simply open the Voice Memos app, tap on the round red record button, and start talking. When you’re finished hit the square black button in the lower right.
