iPod Touch

Some of the biggest news today at the Apple event today was the new iPod touch. It was hardly a surprise, since everyone had pretty much guessed the new features. Still, it's fun to see Apple always moving ahead. As expected, it has a camera (including HD video), a front-facing camera for videoconferencing, the FaceTime software first offered in iPhone 4, and the new and very impressive 960 x 640 retina display. The new iPod touch starts at $229 for the 8GB model. It's amazing how far this device has come.

Decent audio dock components (ones that don't cost a fortune, but produce a good sound) for iPod (only iPod...correction posted) are pretty common now, but finding one that looks totally cool doing it is always a bonus. This year, I checked out quite a few audio-related components for iPhone, and iPod (starting  back in January at CES). The iCrystal is one of my favorites in this category of dock for iPod. It plays music, it charges, and it looks totally awesome in the process...

Generally, the iPhone and the iPad get all the noise, and why not, they're sexy, but the iPod Touch has been a stealthy money-maker for Apple, more than an iPod and less than an iPhone, it's been selling huge and quietly. 

In February 2010, BusinessInsider.com featured it on their always interesting Chart of the Day:

One thing I like about the new iPhone 4 has nothing to do with what it can do. Apple has done users the terrific favour of making it available directly from them UNLOCKED. While you have to pay full price, and won't get the cost subsidized by a carrier, it also means that you can now shop for the best deal voice+text+data you can find, possibly even avoiding a long-term contract. 

It's always fun to speculate ahead of Apple's September revelations and veteran Apple watchers are predicting that the forth-coming updated iPod Touch will finally have the ability to shoot stills and video.

Pinball wizards who are fans of Pinball HD for the iPad will be happy to learn that the same developer has created a pinball table for Sony Music themed with the heavy metal rock band Slayer.

Fans of Slayer's music will no doubt find the pinball interpretation of their music and visual style worth investigating, but for those of us who are not Slayer fans yet still looking for a pinball fix beyond Pinball HD will be satisfied with this game.

If you're like me you are constantly checking to see what's new in the iPhone/iPad app world. I love it when new apps come out that help me enjoy my devices more.....and do things more efficiently. There are two apps that make my searching much easier. One is Appshopper which keeps an updated list of new apps. You can search by iPhone or iPad, review price history, look for only free apps and a whole lot more. You can add apps to a wish list so at any point you can see if they have dropped in price. But if you are really looking for a way to catch a deal as soon as it happens Appsniper is for you. This is not a universal app but still works on the iPad.
