Griffin Joins the Crowdfunding Crowd with Cove Multi-Device Charging Station

image

Crowdfunding is not just for the independent inventor. Firms as big as Sony have joined the bandwagon and tested market acceptance of new products. Griffin, one of the leading vendors of accessories for Apple and other brands has launched an Indiegogo campaign for the Cove. The Cove is an elegant all-in-one charging station that charged up to five tablets or smartphones, but with a twist. About the size and appearance of a breadbox, the Cove tucks all the wires and devices inside a wood case. Martha Stewart would approve.

Make iPhone Calls Over Wi-Fi with iOS 8.3

image

Apple just released iOS 8.3 with new emojis and other features, but the most important feature, for Sprint users at least, may be the ability to seamlessly use Wi-Fi to make phone calls. You need to edit some settings to make this magic work. Go to Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calls. T-Mobile customers have already been able to do this, and now Sprint users of the iPhone 5, 5s, 5c, 6, and 6 Plus can join in on the fun. And those calls do not count against your cellular minutes!

Leef iBRIDGE Mobile Memory Adds Storage But at a Price

image

Leef gave me their iBRIDGE Mobile Memory (starts at $59.99) to try. I wanted to like it, but I have mixed feelings. It does the job, which is to provide extra storage for your iOS device, and allow for easy transfer between those iOS devices and a computer. But there are some deficiencies.

Skylink Offers Home Security for the Do It Yourselfer

image

Skylink allowed me to try its SK-200 Alarm System Starter Kit ($149.99). This is a compact, easily giftable solution for anyone looking for home security without the contract and monthly payments. Because it is mostly wireless and compact, it could be a great solution for apartment or dorm dwellers looking to add a little security without permanently installing a wired system.

Review: The Trident Kraken Case

image

This past weekend, during a long train trip (over six hours each way) I had the opportunity to try Kraken iPhone Case ($49.95). I appreciated the kickstand as it allowed me to flip down the tray table and catch up on some TV shows during the ride!

Samsung Boots Management as iPhone 6 and 6 Plus Gain

image

Samsung had an advantage over Apple for years by offering larger phones or "phablets" while Apple stuck with 4-inch iPhones. That changed with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, which offer a 4.7-inch or 5.5-inch screen, respectively. Korea-based Samsung is also getting squeezed at the low-end by cheaper Android phones from Xiomi and other Chinese manufacturers.
