Here's How Apple Is Using the Hidden Apple Watch Port

image

Apple may not want third parties to take advantage of the hidden diagnostics port behind the Apple Watch's band connector, but that hasn't stopped Apple from using it. In some leaked photos, a Brazilian blog (blogdoiphone.com) shows how Apple's own display stands keep those Apple Watches charged while running demos.

Add Power to your iPhone for Just $10

image

Act fast, because until May 16th at 11:59pm (ET) only, PowerSkin is offering their PoP'n for just $10 shipped. Technically, it's a penny with $9.99 shipping, but however you slice it, it's a good deal, since it normally lists for $49.99 plus shipping. The PowerSkin PoP'n latches on to the Lightning port (or microUSB if that's what you order) of your iPhone and sticks to the back of the phone or case. Not all cases will work with it, as you need some clearance around the lightning port, but you could always remove your case if needed. Their website lists the iPhone 5/5s/5c, but it should work with an iPhone 6.

Apple Watch Charger May Not Be Proprietary After All

image

Apple often likes to go their own way. If there is a standardized solution that meets their needs, like USB-C, they may embrace it as they did with the new MacBook. Apple has also been known to work with companies like Intel to develop technologies such as Thunderbolt and Firewire. But other times, Apple is happy to blaze their own path, as they did with Lightning. Initially, it looked like the Apple Watch's magnetic charger might be as proprietary as Apple's MagSafe chargers. It now appears that the circular watch charger is based on the Qi open standard, although Apple has not confirmed this.

Charge Your iPhone With...Your Furniture?

Apple is just getting in to wireless charging, if you consider the Apple Watch's magnetic charger to be wireless. Other technologies, like inductive charging have been around and thanks to the Android's diverse set of manufacturers, this is an area where Apple lags behind.

Griffin Joins the Crowdfunding Crowd with Cove Multi-Device Charging Station

image

Crowdfunding is not just for the independent inventor. Firms as big as Sony have joined the bandwagon and tested market acceptance of new products. Griffin, one of the leading vendors of accessories for Apple and other brands has launched an Indiegogo campaign for the Cove. The Cove is an elegant all-in-one charging station that charged up to five tablets or smartphones, but with a twist. About the size and appearance of a breadbox, the Cove tucks all the wires and devices inside a wood case. Martha Stewart would approve.

Skylink Offers Home Security for the Do It Yourselfer

image

Skylink allowed me to try its SK-200 Alarm System Starter Kit ($149.99). This is a compact, easily giftable solution for anyone looking for home security without the contract and monthly payments. Because it is mostly wireless and compact, it could be a great solution for apartment or dorm dwellers looking to add a little security without permanently installing a wired system.

Power Your Apple Watch, iPhone, iPad, and Car with Cyntur’s JumperPack Mini

image

They say you can never have too much money. I don't know if that's true. Shakespeare had King Richard shouting "A horse, a horse! My kingdom for a horse!" I don't ride a horse, but I do have a couple of old convertibles that have had the battery die on occassion, so I can relate. All the money in the world won't help you if your car and phone batteries are dead and nobody is around to help. That's why I was very excited to see the JumperPack mini from Cyntur.

Want an Apple Watch With Better Battery Life? Get the 42 mm One

image

At the Apple Watch announcement, Apple didn't spell out the differences between the 38 mm and 42 mm versions of the Apple Watch, but we are learning now that the larger device has a larger battery. It makes sense, from what we learned about the new MacBook. Apple loves to cram batteries into every nook and cranny. There is a precedent, as the iPhone 6 Plus has a larger battery than the iPhone 6 (but it also needs a larger battery to power the much bigger screen.)

EZCharge Could Be the Best Car Charger You Can Buy

image

Bracketron gave me an EZCharge ($24.95) Dual High-Speed USB Charger to try. It could be the best car charger you can buy, and I say that because very often, such car chargers are free, as promotional items. But in this case, you get what you pay for. This car chargers offers a lot of features that make it worth paying for.

March 9 Apple Announcement: Surprise! Apple News We Didn't Expect

image

Apple normally tries to be super secretive before an announcement, but the Apple Watch was an anomaly. Apple took the rare step of introducing it months before it was shipping or even finalized. As Apple did not have a smartwatch product line to protect, they could afford to do so. Plus, it froze consumer purchases of competing gadgets. Still, we didn't know everything about the Apple Watch, until today. And we still have more to learn, once it reaches consumers' hands (and wrists!)
