Soonr -- cloud service for small businesses now offers iPad integration

Soonr announced today the first cloud service with integrated editing for the iPad via their Soonr - Workplace app (free). Of course, there are other options, such as using an app such as Office2 to directly edit Microsoft Office documents stored in Dropbox. But Soonr goes much further. You can store, share, access, and sync files, as well as edit Microsoft Office files both online and offline from within the Soonr app.

Syncing Files Online with Your iPad

SpiderOak, Dropbox, and SugarSync help you secure and access vital data online

They say you can't take it with you. The "it" in that saying originally referred to your personal wealth, but until recently, it also referred to personal information stored on your computer. For most of my life, data was a nearly immovable object, as heavy as your computer. Today, with mobile devices and the steadily improving effectiveness of cloud computing, it is easier than ever to back up, sync, and access important data without filling up your storage drive or adding a single ounce to your gear bag.

Move'n Call

I like to gather novel uses of the iPhone and recently did an article for the magazine on a couple dozen apps that let you use the camera for doing things other than taking pictures or videos. Now I'm starting to be fascinated by the various ways the motion sensor can be used. A new app called Move'n Call ($1.99) lets you make a call with just a wave of your hand. As the video shows, first you train your iPhone to recognize a gesture and then you associate that gesture with a contact. Then to call the person, you simply make that gesture and your iPhone dials the contact.

Carbonite Access -- free apps give you access to your computer files

I finally got around to signing up for Carbonite, and am amazed at how well this backup service works and how easy it is. In my mind, everyone who uses a computer should use Carbonite. The service costs $59 a year for unlimited storage. You install it, and it automatically backs up the files and settings on your desktop computer. Then if you like, you can use their Carbonite Access iPhone or iPad app to access your files anywhere, anytime. The iPad app was just released in March.

Terra -- free iPad web browser offers tabs, importing of bookmarks

I can't live without tabs. When I browse my personalized Yahoo news page, I click on links to items of interest and have them load in a background tab. That way I don't have to wait for pages to load when I'm ready to read specific news stories or blog posts. Terra is a free web browser for the iPad that offers tabs. It has an unusually high rating in the App Store and was recently ranked as the top free iPad app in the U.S. App Store. The new version 1.2 now adds importing of bookmarks from Safari, Firefox, and Chrome.

Home Design 3D for iOS - plan your next crib!

Home Design 3D by Livecad, might be amongst the coolest (and useful) apps for iOS I have found (if only it had Visio integration). The app works well in too many ways to count. If you are planning on redecorating, redesigning a part of your home/apartment, or want to plan your ultimate dream pad, you will want to grab this app.

Monica -- free voice-controlled personal assistant app talks to you

Monica (free) is a fun personal assistant that not only gives you voice control but also speaks. You can ask Monica to read aloud your email, news articles, horoscope, or Google Docs, or to access Facebook. You can also ask Monica questions, but you do have to enter text. Monica will, however, read the answer to you. A nice feature is that you don’t need to tap any buttons or anything; you get Monica’s attention by simply saying, “Monica,” and then Monica responds by giving you menu of options, from which you speak your choice.
