Review: Pocket Tunes…also Last Day to Win a Free Version!

I’m a radio-aholic. I have XM satellite radio in my car, and stream Pandora at work. I stream FM Radio from a receiver in the upstairs of my house, I'm so geekified! With the major bump in bandwidth many households now enjoy via high-speed internet access, streaming is an easy way to enjoy the latest tunes, TV, or video all via your computer (or iPhone/iPod as it were).

Read on for full contest rules.

Streaming Media News

I'm currently working on a review of streaming solutions, and recently noted some interesting news items that relate. Orb, the excellent PC-based streaming media service is bringing their fabulous software to OS X. Go here to read more and get Orb for Mac OS X 10.5 or later. Pocket Tunes (which I will review here soon), an Internet Radio app for iPhone and iPod, has also recently added a very useful feature to it's player that enables record and time-shifting of streams.

Everything you'll ever need to know about listening to radio on the iPhone - Part I

image

The iPhone is an ideal platform for listening to online radio stations. In this article, I explain everything you’ll ever need to know about all this. You’ll learn how radio stations can be listened to on even non-jailbroken iPhones, without any hacks to play stations in the background; I also present a very thorough comparison of currently available third-party radio software.

First and foremost, let’s take a closer look at the built-in, out-of-the-box radio support.

1. Built-in capabilities: QuickTime

All versions of the iPhone (and, of course, the iPod Touch – from now on, I refer to all these as “iPhone”), under OS3, already have support for playing back some (not all!) possible radio stream types.
