Review - iHome iW3 Wireless Speaker System

image

Back in 2011, I reviewed the iW1 when it first came out; an awesomely portable/rechargeable wireless speaker from iHome--portable, as in literally no wires--with an internal 2600 mAh Li-ion battery. The Wi-Fi setup was a bit sketchy, but I finally figured out a compromise by setting up a second Wi-Fi access point. Been looking forward to trying out one of the new iW3 models and got my hands on a review unit. The iW3 is like the iW1, but taller, lighter and easier to haul around the house. The sound quality is pretty close to what I remember from the iW1, and though it won't blow out a window, it will let you easily push quality music to any room in your home.

iHome announces new AirPlay speaker - iW2

image

We reviewed the iW1 last year here on the blogs and in print, and pretty much agreed it was a great product for wireless music streaming via AirPlay (see my review here), though maybe a little wonky to configure in my case. One aspect that I liked is that the iW1 is truly wireless; sporting a rechargeable internal battery that not only allows the device to be carried around the house, but still provides a charge to your devices when connected. The lower priced and eminent iW2 (due out April 1, 2012) will not have this feature, but otherwise will include the streaming excellence of the iW1. You can read on about the updated model (which is a bit smaller than the iW1) in the included PR release.

Get the iW1 at an Apple Store near you!

Probably one of the best wireless music systems I have reviewed (review here) and now available at Apple Store, Best Buy and Crutchfield (temporarily out of stock at iHome). The Wi-Fi was a little wonky for me (warning if you still use WEP), but this is a great system and if you have an iPhone, 'Pad or 'Pod lover in the family, this would make an awesome holiday gift! Review - iHome iW1 Wireless Speaker System

image

The iW1 from iHome is a superb AirPlay compatible wireless speaker. I was the first person to get a review unit, so more or less the first guinea pig user. Consequently, I had some guinea pig type problems with it, but with help from the folks at iHome, was able to get it working quite well. It is arguably the best combination of features I have yet seen in a portable speaker system.

Latest iHome Docks at #CES

image

This year at CES, I am trying to stay in North Hall mostly and focus on the iOS-related vendors and accessories, and wow are there a ton! I was able to check out the latest and greatest audio accesories from Speakel, and iHome (Speakel details in a separate post). Last year, I  covered (pretty extensively) the Sonos S5 wireless audio system. iHome is coming out with a wireless audio streaming product based on AirPlay which is similar to the S5.
