Solar Walk

What I Played This Week—Cubemen 2, Solar Walk, Abducted Coming Soon

image

I have a couple of great apps for review this week and some news about an exciting new 3D action/adventure and puzzle-solving game coming soon, called Abducted. The first app I played this week was Cubemen 2 ($1.99). Cubemen is an engaging real-time strategy and tower-defense game that puts you in command of a squad of blocky soldiers. You can vector them to protect your base, or move them out to attack and destroy the enemy. The second app I played (though "playing" is not really the right word) this week, is the new, improved, and simply astounding Solar Walk ($2.99)! I used it to research earthly and extra-terrestrial satellites and to follow the beautiful and inspiring Cassini mission to Saturn!

Teaching Science with iOS — From Macro to Micro — Exploring Space

When studying the solar system, it's hard to beat Solar Walk ($2.99) from Vito Technology. You begin with an image of the earth with many light blue lines circling it. Tap one and the app provides a close-up view of a satellite. All the satellites are rendered in 3D, and a clickable info button reveals information and images associated with the satellite. Solar Walk provides enough satellite detail to have good conversations about orbits, satellite construction, and observation. Combine this app with Google Earth and you can have a good dialog about public and private surveillance. There also is information on the International Space Station.

Solar Walk now available for iPad!

Another of my favs to hopefully become a big hit now on iPad...press release/links follow: Alexandria, VA., -- May 6, 2010 -- Vito Technology today announced its Solar Walk App for iPad is available on the App Store. A comprehensive addition to Star Walk, Solar Walk shows a 3D model of the Solar System with detailed info about each planet. It gives users a beautiful, educational, and interactive walk around the Solar system on their iPads.

Amazing App Solar Walk allows you to explore the planets in detail!

Just when I start to get bored with my iPod touch, a new app comes along that makes it like new again. The app in this case is Solar Walk from VITO. I have reviewed the amazing Star Walk previously here (a celestial viewing app), but was wondering when they would get round to adding 3-D planet exploration to the mix. There's a great (and free) PC app out there that does this called Celestia, and Google Earth also has some pretty awesome planet/star-gazing features.
