Apps: Social Networking
I have searched and searched for an app that allows me to easily manage my Twitter feeds on my iPad. I have tried many and have settled in on Osfoora. Things I like, are the ability to follow multiple feeds, built in URL shortening, ease of customization, not to mention a comfortable layout. I find that I tap less with Osfoora than with other Twitter apps, and saving time is a big deal. It does cost $3.99... and for me, it's well worth it. http://www.osfoora.com/
I’ve been using Ping for the iPhone since its initial release date, and I’ve been extremely happy with it.
Ping is a text-messaging app. There is no monthly charges and no roaming charges to Ping someone, but they must also have a Ping account. This is great for your family and friends and saves a bundle.
While attending CES, I blogged about the trend of using an iPhone or iPod touch as a universal remote. Since then, I have had a chance to play with the Rē from NewKinetix.
I really wanted to like the Rē. I am the gadget guy, who always has the latest of everything. I have owned numerous high-end universal remote controls, from Philips, Sony, Logitech (Harmony) and Monster Cable. I am not opposed to spending $100 or more for a device that can connect all of my audio and video equipment and displace multiple remotes.
Well after having my iPad for a solid day now, and the hype is wearing off, let me tell you, it is definitely not just a big iPod Touch or iPhone.
Where to start?
I am on record as having some reservations about this new device so I am obliged to give credit where it is due.
This thing is fast... zippy even! I never would have said that about my netbooks, one of which I sold to make room for the iPad that I am typing this on. I am sure there will be frustrations, such as when I visit a website that requires Flash or if I have to type at length, but so far I do not feel as if I am missing out on anything, even as I type this on my iPad. I am getting faster at typing with this virtual keyboard. The trick is to make a leap of faith and trust the autocorrection. And find a comfortable way to hold the iPad.
The device is heavier than I expected. Heavy may not be the right word. It has more heft. It is substantial.
Two free apps announced today increase your options for making low-cost calls via your iPhone or iPod touch. goober VoIP is like Skype in that it can use the data capability of your iPhone via WiFi or 3G to make telephone calls. But the rate is 1 cent per minute compared to Skype's 2.1 cents per minute for calls in the U.S. and Canada. International calls are around 1.4 cents per minute. The first two minutes of any call are free, and you get 100 free minutes when you first sign up.
Shakespeare wrote "The play's the thing", in Hamlet, but with CrowdZone (FREE, http://www.crowdzone.com), that could easily become "The CROWD's the thing". CrowdZone is a social networking tool focused on sporting events. In fact, CrowdZone is probably the ultimate tailgating app! You create a profile and see what events are happening today. You join an event, whether you are at the game or watching at home or at a sports bar. You can leverage the location-aware capabilities of the iPhone and find like-minded users nearby! Root for your team, chat with others, and earn "trophies" for your own comments. You can even earn real world rewards, like tickets!
I just had to write again about how much fun I'm having with Social Fun Box. One of the things I didn't like about Facebook before is the limit on graphics I can use. I LOVE graphics!
Now, with Social Fun Box I can express myself with these cute images. I can put them on my own page, give gifts (for free!), and put some on my friends pages.
Here's my current FB page:
Love this app! You can read my complete review of Social Fun Box HERE.
I don't use Twitter that much, but I like the idea of Tweetsii. This newly released free app lets you see what people around you are tweeting. It also lets you "geo-tag" your tweets so that they're associated with a particular place, and you can add photos to the tweets. A wide range of other features include the ability to see what's trending nearby, see tweets from particular locations worldwide, and much more. Pretty amazing.
