Apps: Photography
(Note that this article, as with most of my stuff, shows you not only how the camera can be reconfigured, but also shows you - how you can play back a YouTube video frame-by-frame; - how you can create and upload packages to your Cydia [an alternative to Apple's AppStore] repository and, last but definitely not least, gives you a full source-level explanation of the entire app that I've written to quickly switch between the different iPhone4 camera configurations. No one has released anything similar for the iPhone 4 or the iPhone 3GS [for which I'll also release a very similar utility in a few days] before!)
I can't tell you how many times I have been at work and wanted to get a photo I had saved on my iMac at home. How I have handled it until now is through LogMein. I love the app and how it lets me access my desktop from away, but here is a free option that will let you scoop photos from your desktop/laptop iPhoto library and put them right onto your iPad. The app is called Cinq. The app is free and all you need to do is register with them, download a free app to your desktop/laptop and be on wifi. What happens then is almost magical. Simply open the Cinq app on your iPad, log into your account and before you can say holy toledo, you will be looking at your iPhoto library.
There are a lot of apps that let you take a picture using the iPhone's built-in camera... but I recently discovered Photo Double Fun which lets you use BOTH the front and rear cameras, simultaneously, to take photos as well as videos! Why is this so cool? Suppose you want to document that you were at a specific location, seeing something in person. The Photo Double Fun app combines the two images into one, and if you use their free version, it adds a watermark and you can only store a couple of photos at a time, without upgrading.
A lack of native zoom is a real hindrance with the iPhone camera when shooting video. But fortunately, there are apps that let you add digital zoom. Video Zoom 2 ($0.99) gives you up to 3x digital zoom, including real-time zoom during recording -- without decreasing image stability or frame rate. It offers a choice of four different resolutions for the iPhone 4. You can view videos from within the app, and can shoot any number of videos before coming back to preview or export.
