Misc news & roundup / guide updates (09/27/2009)

image
I’ve updated several of my guides / bibles / roundups to reflect the latest changes. See the bottommost “UPDATE (09/27/2009)” section in each of them. The only news item I haven’t published in another article is the one describing the new Backgrounder version.

AppStore news:

Ever wanted to watch WMV (TV) streams on your iPhone? Now you can!: making Streamer compatible with all WMV streams; NetTV [Lite] news.

iPhone Multiplayer Gaming Bible updated

I've added tons of new games and no less than four updates to the iPhone Multiplayer Gaming Bible. Next week, I'll also add tons of new videos showing each and every game in action.

Pandora

Enter the name of your favorite band and the app will create a “radio station” that plays music from the band you selected or from bands that play similar music. And the best part? You never have to listen to a yappy disc jockey again.

Free i.TV 2.0 now available

image

In an earlier post I noted that i.TV 2.0 had been announced. And now it's out. This free app is billed as "the only movie, DVD, and TV guide you'll ever need." The new version lets you use your iPhone or iPod touch as a remote control with a TiVo, and more devices are being added.  The new version also includes a streamlined interface, push notifications, and more.

Animoto: It's a love thing

I fell in love with the girl before I found out that she could cook, dance, and play tennis, plus loves movies and my friend J.R.R. Tolkien. Well, okay, a lot of that is a fantasy, but something LIKE that happened with Animoto and it’s new iPhone app, because I followed up a tech alert on USA Today that mentioned Animoto, and wow, it was a dream come true, even before they launched the app.

But first you would have to have my dream, which was for an easy way to take a bunch of my poems, or any poet’s poems, and add multi-image effects (and maybe music) to them to create a sort of MTV version of poetry.

Misc news

1.) Multiplayer games (see my all-in-one roundup & bible):

a. A brand new Scorched earth / Worms clone, KIL.A.TON, has just been released. It has lounge-based multiplayer (albeit, at the time of writing, it’s still empty, which may change in the future). A decent alternative to, for example, Star Hogs by IUGO and Iron Sight by Polarbit; particularly if you take into account that, in KIL.A.TON, you can have up to six players (while in Star Hogs “only” up to four, and, in Iron Sight, only two) . See THIS for more info.

Free i.TV app soon available in version 2.0

image

i.TV today announced the imminent availability of version 2.0. Already this app was promoted as "the only movie, DVD, and TV guide you'll ever need." Version 2.0 includes the "i.TV Remote Control Framework," which allows third parties to integrate functionality into i.TV. And the first to do so, is TiVo. You'll be able to use your iPhone to change the channel, fast forward, record, and play your favorite shows and movies with just a tap on your iPhone or iPod touch.

10 most idiotic iPhone apps

AreaCellphone.com has posted a fun list of the 10 most idiotic iPhone apps. They range from Poop the World (which lets you keep a public record of where you've, aah, well, you know) to Hold On (which lets you see how long you can hold your finger on a button on the screen).
