The iControlPad is an iPhone accessory of near-mythical proportions - it's been in development for nearly two years. Multiple delays have plagued the product, but at last, iOS gamers can breathe a collective sigh of relief, as the device's creator, @craigix, has announced that orders are finally going to be taken this weekend. For anyone who hasn't heard of the iControlPad, please avert your eyes to the picture attached to this article. After soaking in the beauty of what your retinas have just observed, read on.

Movie Club -- free app offers over 60 streaming movies, also free

image

Everybody likes movies, and here's yet another app for streaming them to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. The free Movie Club gives you free access to over 60 movies. Naturally, these aren't recent movies, but they do offer early appearances of well known actors such as Robert De Niro, Demi Moore, Jack Nicholson, and Kirk Douglas. These may be movies that are also freely available on YouTube.

Amazing Camera Apps

Add barcode readers, augmented reality, fax, language translation, heart rate monitor, and more to your iPhone or 4th gen iPod touch

The range of creative and practical apps that use the camera in unusual ways is astonishing. Who would have thought that you could use it as a heart rate monitor or a business card reader? There's even an app for those who are colorblind, to show them the colors present in any object you photograph.

Apple made a brilliant decision when it let developers create apps that access the camera input and use it in non-traditional ways. In this month's column, I offer a roundup of some of these apps.

Life imitates Apps at #CES

image
Pocket God, I am T-Pain and Angry Birds have taken the app world by storm, and I guess it was only inevitable that the real world would want their own versions. Pocket God now has models of their characters available for purchase. You can act out your own scenes of destruction (or benevolence) as you see fit, or just display them in a glass case, the way your grandmother displayed Hummel figurines!

Unleash your inner artist with ArtRage at #CES

image

I've written about Drawing Pad for the iPad before and it's great for kids, but for the serious artist, check out ArtRage. ArtRage is almost like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator in the sophistication, yet they are able to accomplish this with an elegant iPad interface.

Feel free to yap away as you watch TV with yap.tv at #CES!

image
Interactive TV has arrived, it's just not on your television set, or so says yap.tv, the app and web-based social network for TV audiences. Rather than try to bring intelligence and interactivity to the traditional TV set, yap.tv uses your mobile device as a smart companion for TV viewing. Thanks to yap's built-in social network, as well as twitter and Facebook, you can learn what your friends are watching (and they can do the same). You can create and participate in polls. Imagine getting your closest friends to vote on the next American Idol or who should be kicked off the island.

OverDrive Media Console -- free app lets you check out ebooks and audio books from your library

image

Ever since I heard that our public library in this small town had audio books that you could download from their website, I've been wanting to give it a try. But as with so many things, I never got around to it, mainly since it entailed going to their website, downloading, and them moving to iTunes to put it on my iPhone or iPad. Now the free OverDrive Media Console makes the whole thing a snap: you do everything from within the app.

Publish your music in iTunes

image

Ever since I got the music bug with my Magic Fiddle (.99) I've been wondering; so now that I can play some music on a virtual fiddle is that it?  Where can I go with that?

While my fiddling skills are still in development, the larger question for me was what can I do with music that I create; on my iMac, iPad or iPhone?
