Apps: Books
Children’s stories have changed quite a bit since the invention of mobile devices. This unique book, called Broadway Barks, is no exception. The app brings children much more than just a story to read before bedtime. It can bring those interactive activities, colorful illustrations, assisted reading, and more importantly, an educational experience. Your children will never get bored with this story or the app that it is part of. The story itself is based off of real issues in today’s society, and by reading it children will be brought up to speed on some of the important things that they never learn about in school.
I have been playing with electronic books in anticipation of my upcoming series of columns on education and iOS for iPhone Life. Today I had the pleasure of meeting with Inkling CEO Matt MacInnis.

The Lion And The Mouse By Kid is a great application for children looking for an entertaining game. The application features graphics targeted towards the children demographic and is a very informative application. The Lion And The Mouse features 33 beautiful animated scenes that are drawn in a very cartoony atmosphere.
I’ll be perfectly up front about this – while I had some interest in this application, I mainly downloaded it so I could fill in a quick survey and get a $10 iTunes card. As it turns out, even if I didn’t get my survey submitted in time to get the gift card, I’m glad I made the purchase. I don’t know how close the story is to the original book, but it’s certainly more interesting than the classic MGM film starring Judy Garland (no offense to the film, which I do enjoy). Additionally, the interactivity with the images on screen – and occasionally the words – is actually quite fun. Now I just need to let my kids look through it…
