The iPhone 6 Plus: A Gamer's Perspective

image

I've been using an iDevice as my primary means of game consumption since the introduction of the iPhone in 2007. Since that time, I've see the landscape of iOS gaming change dramatically, but perhaps never more significantly than this year with the introduction of the iPhone 6 Plus alongside Apple's A8 chip and Metal interface. If Apple's iOS devices presented a challenge to consoles and dedicated handhelds alike before now, I would consider the iPhone 6 Plus the beginning of the end for the age of console-dominated gaming.

iPhone 6/6 Plus Case of the Week: Pelican ProGear Voyager

image

It's that time of year again. Right after a new iPhone comes out there is the inevitable deluge of great cases to protect your new investment. This happens with every iPhone release, but perhaps never more markedly than with the introduction of the completely new form factors of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. If ever an iPhone needed a case, it is these larger models, with their increased real estate, slick, rounded edges, and extra weight. Rather than clump a bunch of individual cases together into one roundup I'll be focusing on one great iPhone 6/6 Plus case each week over the course of the coming months. This week's featured case is Pelican's ProGear Voyager.

Why Jabra's Revo Are My Pick for Best On-Ear Bluetooth Headphone

image

Out of a crowded field, the Jabra Revo Bluetooth headphones ($199.99) get my vote as one of best pairs of Bluetooth headphones of this year. Specifically, within the on-ear category of headphones, the Revo's performance is unparalleled. They are masterfully designed and show a remarkable level of attention to all of the details that go into making an exceptional pair of 'phones; from their intuitive user interface to the extreme torture testing they go through before they are shipped. I realize Bluetooth headphones aren't everyone's cup of tea, but if you are looking for a top quality pair, the Revos are the best your money can buy.

The Best Rugged iPhone 6 Plus Case for Under $20.

image

I only ended up with the Unicorn Beetle PRO ($19.99) by happenstance. I needed a rugged case for my iPhone 6 Plus as soon as possible, since I didn't want to use it without a case, but while most case makers had plenty of cases for the iPhone 6 ready to ship at launch, few were ready with cases for the 6 Plus, and even fewer had cases ready for the 6 Plus that were rugged options. With good reason I felt I needed a heavy duty case for this large and heavy iPhone 6 Plus, so I took to Amazon and before long these rugged cases from a manufacturer I hadn't heard of began coming up in the search results, and their rugged cases seemed, at first glance at least, to be almost on par with Griffin's Survivor All-Terrain ($59.99) or Otterbox's Defender ($69.90), two industry-leading, rugged case brands. So I took a chance and placed my order, figuring it was only $20 in the event that I hated it. I can now say that not only was I immediately impressed by the overall design and build of this sturdy case, I've been using it for almost two weeks now, and I've already drop-tested this case with hard falls from approximately three-feet high. It's safe to say that the way this case performs and feels in the hand is definitely reminiscent of the Otterbox Defender or the Survivor All-Terrain.

Updategate: Downgrade Back to iOS 8 from iOS 8.0.1

image

It's not unusual for Apple to release hardware or software that has a glitch or bug. It's become the unfortunate trend that when a glitch in the Apple matrix is discovered, it gets nicknamed "such and such-gate." Do you remember Antennagate, which happened on Steve Jobs' shift, when numerous users reported dropped calls if they simply held their iPhone "wrong"? Then again, you needn't think back that far. Last month we were hit with Celebgate, (aka: the Fappening) where personal iCloud accounts of popular female celebrities were hacked and their nude photos flooded the internet.

The iPhone 6 Plus: Week One, Second Thoughts?

image

I don't regret my decision to get the iPhone 6 Plus, not at all. To say that Apple has impressed me with the new iPhone 6 Plus would be an understatement. I am in awe of this device, often times when I am using it I'll notice a smile creep onto my face as I play my favorite graphically enhanced games or notice amazing new device features in action. But after a week with this iPhone at my side I've discovered that despite the fact that the 6 Plus is proving to be one of the best premium smartphones on the planet, there are still some significant issues (yes, even after this most recent iOS 8.0.1 update) that Apple really needs to address.

Hello iPhone 6 Plus: First Impressions and Unboxing

image

The iPhone I've been requesting that Apple make is finally here. My iPhone 6 Plus safely arrived this morning and it's everything I hoped it would be. With great finesse and style, it encapsulates all I'd envisioned a larger iPhone would offer. I am not in the least bit disappointed, in fact, if it was a quarter-inch to a half-inch bigger that would've been just fine with me. My first impressions (and unboxing video) follow after the break.

Game Centered: Metal Revolutionizes iOS Gaming

image

Game Centered features roundups and in-depth reviews of the best in iOS games and related gaming news. This week we've got some of the biggest news to concern iOS gaming ever, that's no exaggeration. You've been hearing all about the new and improved power of iOS 8's Metal, which vastly enhances the way games and other graphic-intensive applications can access the power of your iDevice's computer chip. Well, the day has finally arrived and iOS Metal can now be taken for a test drive. Metal is the most significant advancement in the world iOS gaming since the introduction of the iPhone in 2007. Have you tried it out yet?

Adventure Safely and in Style with These Rugged iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus Cases

image

One of the many grand achievements that Apple has made with the new iPhone 6 series, is that even though they are larger than the 4-inch screened iPhones we've all become so used to, they are so lightweight and thin that they aren't a burden to take anywhere and everywhere. Of course, this doesn't mean they won't get cracked or dented if they are subjected to rough handling or mishaps. Nonetheless, I can guarantee that within a year, we'll have seen plenty of extreme videos and pictures captured on these new iDevices, and it's safe to say that much of the adventurous footage that will come from the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will come courtesy of devices encased in one of the following protective cases. Of course, not everyone who wants heavy-duty protection from their iPhone case intends to compete in the X-Games or to climb Everest. A lot of people just want a hardy case that can stand up to the inevitable abuse of a busy and active life. So this roundup is also for anyone who wants a rugged iPhone 6/6 Plus case that can take a beating but still manages to have a slim profile, and takes into consideration things like having good acoustics for calls, music, and videos, as well as easy access to all of the iPhone's buttons and ports.

Infinity Blade Chronicles: The Movie

image

If ever an iOS game deserved to have a movie made about it, it is Infinity Blade. In what will come as great news for any fans of the groundbreaking, award-winning iOS game, Infinity Blade is potentially about to be made into a short, fan-funded movie. At the helm of a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for this project is Josh Aker, composer of the Infinity Blade soundtracks. He talks to us about his vision and the incredible talent he's already amassed for this project in his Kickstarter video below. As you will see, his enthusiasm for the game and for the movie is infectious.
