Angry Sperms: Interesting gameplay and NOT an Angry Birds clone

image

There must be an Appstore 101 rule somewhere that says: Thou shall not name your apps to resemble a highly successful app, because it will be highly suspect.  In the case of Angry Sperms, the tongue in cheek reference to Angry Birds is therefore quite unfortunate, because I actually think that the game play is rather innovative and cute, and the app quality is not bad. At $0.99 without a free lite version, most people would be hard-pressed to justify downloading this game, thinking that it would turn out to be a lemon.

Video parody: Charlie and the Apple Factory

Collegehumor.com has made another Apple parody video. In their re-imagination of ''Charlie and the Apple Factory”, Steve Jobs has awarded iTickets to several lucky winners who won the opportunity to find out what makes Apple products so special. Bill Gates has a cameo in the video but I think the Collegehumor producers haven't met him recently since the likeness wasn't there....(Warning: may be mildly offensive to Apple fans who lack a sense of humor!)

Tiny Wings ousts Angry Birds from Top Paid App Chart

image

Tiny Wings has just ousted Angry Birds from top spot on the Top Paid App chart!

Released on Feb 18th(yes, just over a week ago) by hitherto unknown game developer Andreas Illiger, it has quickly gained popularity on the back of very little marketing effort. I was initially a little sceptical because the game icon wasn’t very slick.

Gameloft announces surprise sale starting from Feb 24th: 30 apps for $0.99 each.

image

Gameloft has just blogged about their surprise app sales (grab them while you can!) starting yesterday (Feb 24th).  Their blog post is over here.

Now, Gameloft has always produced high quality games and there’s a little rivalry going on between them and EA so this announcement is to be expected given that EA recently had a sale.

The list of Gameloft offers on sale for the iphone is pretty cool and I am sure there is something for everyone.

Dual Sim Adaptors for Iphone 4: Using a Normal 3G Sim Card and your microsim at the same time.

image

Let’s face it. For those of us early adopters of microsim cards because of Iphone 4, we know that microsim cards are not catching on in any other phone model and is likely to stay that way for a while. However, for about US$20, the Chinese have developed a dual simcard adaptor that allows you to slot in a normal-sized simcard in an external adaptor, while at the same time allowing you to keep your existing Iphone 4 microsim in the simcard tray – in layman terms, this means that the 2 simcards (Normal Sim + Microsim) are essentially paired up much like batteries connecting in series.

Challenging the Iphone’s dominance: Microsoft-Nokia, Sony-Google, but what about Nintendo?

image

Over a week where reports of Ipad 2G have been intensifying, it is also a stark reminder of Apple’s overwhelming dominance that news of an Iphone jailbreaking breakthrough (pun intended) of the iOS 4.2.1 has probably generated more forum interest than any of Nokia’s products in the past 6 months.

As I have written before on my blogpost 29 Dec 2010,

“Typically it seems that during their developmental process, Apple usually identifies 1 feature that would be game-

Apple Peel Installation Field Report: Ipod Touch 3G becomes an Iphone (well, almost).

image

Reading about the Apple Peel accessory is almost like reading about the Abominable Snowman, Loch Ness monster or the Giant Squid. Everybody has read about them, and there are many articles written about them but nobody has actually seen one.

Well now I have.

In fact, I went one step further; I bought and installed one on an Ipod Touch 3G.

iDos Emulator gets pulled a second time from the Appstore

image

I’ve had wonderful memories when as a kid, I spent several blissful years with my IBM PC XT clone experimenting with Dos programming and played cutting edge games like Ultima IV , Wizardry, Autoduel and Star Control. The iDOS emulator ported by Fast Intelligence was able to deliver an unmatched wave of nostalgia and within a day of installing iDOS on my Ipad, I was trying out some of these classics again – mostly just to see them again in all their glory - 256 VGA colour and adlib sound.

Apple Peel 2: Accessory that allows Ipod to make calls, text messages and GPRS data transfers

image

You might have heard of the Apple Peel or maybe the ZTE Peel offered by Sprint.

In November, Jim Karpen reported in his post here about the ZTE Peel accessory which allows Ipods to access Sprint’s 3G network for data transfers.

Email Interview with JVL MOBI, developer of game app Balloonia

Following Nate’s review of game app Balloonia on 10 December 2010, my kids tried the same pipe strategy game and liked it. Pipe strategy games have a long pedigree in hand-helds and Balloonia is among the first to have ported it nicely to the Iphone/Ipod platform.
