The Victorinox SwissTool Spirit Plus; the only tool a techie should need

Mechanics, Electricians, Plumbers, they all have tools, tools and more tools. Techies, Geeks and tinkerers need only one; The Victorinox Swiss Tool Spirit. The aforementioned tradesmen should also be outfitted with this all in one fit on the belt tool chest.

IT is my passion. I love working with computers in all aspects, from going to my favorite parts store and buying what I need to build one from scratch, to repairing what doesn’t work, to installing and reinstalling what has to be done.

For years, I carried around a bag of tools, including a ratchet set, several screw driver bits, various crimpers and wire cutters and several small pliers. I also carried around a miniature flathead for those various optical emergencies.

No matter what device I am working on, unless I really have a tough job, that tool bag is in the back seat of my car, and the Swiss Tool Spirit is now my tool chest, as it has in it, most of what I need for any given job. Aside from its included ballistic nylon pouch, the tools onboard include (per swissarmy.com);

  1. needlenose pliers
  2. screwdriver 2mm
  3. screwdriver 3mm
  4. wire cutter for thin and soft wire up to 40 HRc
  5. cap lifter
  6. screwdriver 6 mm
  7. crate opener
  8. practical Spirit combi edge blade
  9. scissors
  10. metal file
  11. metal saw
  12. wood saw
  13. reamer
  14. screwdriver
  15. chisel
  16. wire bender
  17. wire stripper
  18. wire scraper
  19. can opener
  20. multi purpose hook
  21. nylon pouch
  22. coupling for corkscrew
  23. hard wire cutter
  24. lanyard hole
  25. individual springs
  26. lock release
  27. luxury box
  28. bit wrench with;
    1. -bit Hex 3 (Inbus)
    2. -bit Hex 4 (Inbus)
    3. -bit Philips 0
    4. -bit Philips 3
    5. -bit Torx 10
    6. -bit Torx 15
    7. space for additional bits
  29. corkscrew
  30. screwdriver

Having been in the industry since 1990 (I know, don’t look that old), I have used similar offerings from Gerber, Leatherman and Sheffield. Well they went by the wayside long ago due to their lack of durability and also one of them had a lock failure which dropped the large blade on a finger which equaled several stitches.

I put the locking mechanism through several drop and shock tests with both a regular hammer as well as a 5lb mallet. Failure was not an option. Infact, unless you really look at it closely, denting does not appear to be an option either. It performs as well as it did out of the box.

Put this on any short list for your favorite geek or techie, and I promise mistletoe wont be needed for a thank you.
