Writing for iPhone life gets me in the know for all the best "stuff" for this incredible gadget/toy/gottahave thing. The other day, i was skimming through the press releases and learned about UpNext 3D cities.
Once downloaded, I put it to the test with the map of the greater Boston area. I was thouroughly impressed. First off, you should know that it is not a GPS application. It will not tell you how to get from place to place, unless you have already saved a location in "my places". That right there appears to be its only limitation. But who cares ? You can already go from place to place with the on-board maps on your device.
What this does give you is a beautiful 3d view of where you are and where you are driving to. Its accuracy (estimated) appeared to be close to 15" or less. You will see the buildings in vivid 3D form as well as other landmarks, including transit stops, tourist destinations, etc. Once you have picked your spot, save it so you can return to your car or starting point.
Also, taking the Boston Maps into consideration, if you are in a very populated area, you can tap on a building and it will show you its contents, from businesses to restaurants to entertainment, etc. You can even rate them as well. If you are on an iPhone, you will be able to access this information in a snap. The iPod Touch requires WiFi access. None the less, this is a must download.
Whichever city you are in, or pick, be sure to pair it with the available transit app; in this case, "OpenMBTA" for Boston.
It is a totally 3D navigation/travel info app that should be on any iPhone or iPod Touch (with GPS capabilities). It was tested on an iPod Touch 2G with the Magellan Premium Car Kit.
