Griffin RoadTrip; the iPod, your way on the highway

We got a hold of what we might cal the best on the go/in the car cradle, charger and play solution for the iPod/iPhone; The Griffin RoadTrip from Griffin Technology. Griffin Technology has long since been a leader in stylish yet technically advanced accessories for the iPhone/iPod while keeping the cost very reasonable for the consumer.

The first thing you are going to want to do prior to unboxing is to download the FREE Griffin Technology iTrip App from the iTunes app store. I said want, due to its usefulness with the RoadTrip product, but it is not mandatory. It is a great app that will help you find the best possible FM frequency for broadcast through your car's speakers.

Unboxing was simple;

  • Take it out of the box
  • Mount the iPod/iPhone (either with or without the case)
  • Adjust the brace (behind device) to steady the iPhone/iPod
  • Plug it in to the cigarette lighter.

It is that simple. You can do a manual tune from the controller under the iPod/iPhone, but the utility above, called the iTrip app will do it for you with the touch of a button called 'smart scan'. Once the smart scan gives you the best frequency, then adjust your radio dial to it and you are ready to hit the open road without cords connected to your iPod. You no longer need a charger, as it is integrated into the RoadTrip product.

So how's it sound ? Well before that is told, please understand its testing phase. This was tested during an 11 hour work day, traveling throughout Metro-Boston, including the city itself and its many suburbs.

Without any interference, it appeared as if the iPod/iPhone was still wired to the AUX jack in my car's stereo. There was minimal if any distortion and the buttons on the device were a welcome sight to controlling the music. It could be as loud or soft as needed and it was still crystal clear,.

The only limitation which was verified by Griffin Technologies tech support is that you may experience slight (as I did) interference in major metropolitan markets such as Boston, NYC, or any large city with skyscrapers. This was expected but was not a hindrance when listening. I was able to use the 'smart scan' feature of the iTrip app to find a better frequency. This in turn made the interruptions minimal if at all. Once out of the concrete jungle though, it was set once and had no distortion for the 35 mile ride home. On the open road (hence its name), the 'RoadTrip" will be invaluable.

The fact that it is also a charger is a great thing. You can play to your hearts content, with no fear of battery depletion. Also, it mounts directly to the cigarette lighter and has a flexible goose neck type extension so you won't have your vision blocked by your device (now illegal in many jurisdictions). This will replace two cords (aux cord and charger) and is well worth the under $80 cost.

All in all, this is a 5 star product and would satisfy any iPod/iPhone accessory collection. It will make any driving time, whether short or long, pleasurable.
