One Week On With iOS4 on iPhone 3G – How Have You Found it?

I installed iOS4 a week ago on my iPhone 3G and since then have been cycling through my iPhone 3G contacts daily to get their feedback.  So far, it’s been a non committal response, although the general consensus has been what a great opportunity to upgrade to iPhone 4!

So what are we loving?

We love the folders, especially those of us who have several screens of applications.  It has added a level of organisation to the iPhone.   One of my colleagues put it quite eloquently – it makes you feel like your applications are living together as a family unit, rather than a bunch of flatmates squatting in a house they have no control over.

The unified Inbox has drawn mixed reactions and this has primarily been around the way we choose to work.  Generally we keep our business e-mails together and separate from personal emails.  The biggest challenge we have collectively found has been the mental switch of dealing with a business e-mail that may be interspersed with a personal e-mail.  Luckily the iPhone still gives you the flexibility to let you chose how you want your e-mail delivered to you.

What needs some loving?

There have been collective groans on performance.  Performance is sluggish on the iPhone 3G with iOS4.  There is no other way to describe it.   It takes time to run up an app, it takes time to actually see the books in iBook, or access social networking applications.

Battery performance has always been a challenge on the iPhone, but is more so on the 3G with iOS4.  What would typically last a good day or day and half with heavy usage, is sagging at the end of a day with average use.

What’s next for us 3G users?  Well, we want the iOS4 features real bad!  Apple have finally brought to the consumer technologies that have been around for years and blended them beautifully in a device that is easy to use for everyone today.   My 3GS friends are loving the performance and the backgrounds, they loved the speed of the upgrade.  How have you found it?

I'm a Kiwi girl, born and bred in New Zealand. I obtained my Commerce Degree at Otago University and since then have programmed, networked and been a technology evangalist for the last 20 years.

I'm a twin mum, with a full time job in IT and spend the remainder of my free time keeping up to date with technology. I don't mind admitting I cannot go anywhere without my iPhone and have such a technology addiction that I wake up at 3am for 30 mins to check my iPhone for any latest happenings!

I spend a lot of time talking to new iPhone users and have created a site specifically for those new user questions.

it is ok!

I have jailbroken iPhone 3G, and i enabled multitasking and wallpaper. Performance is OK, but not so good. Springboard has some lags when switching through pages, but overall it is OK and it worth the upgrade.

iOS4

I have a 3GS and have upgraded the OS. My son, who works for Apple, has my 3G and has upgraded the iOS. He says he's had absolutely no issues. This may sound like a silly thing to love, but it's great to be able to put the apps into folders. That's a great feature. I've chosen to keep a few apps outside of a folder, but it still really cleans things up for me. I can't speak to battery life right now, as I'm off work with an injury, and so my phone habits have changed significantly. I typically use about 6000 minutes per month, and am a heavy data user during my 10-12 hour workday. I'm not sure I like having the wallpaper in the background all the time. That's been another change with iOS4. However, that can be changed in settings. I'm very much ok with the way email is configured. I have my mobile me account, a work account, gmail, and three other personal email accounts. However, I'm also thinking that I may want to go ahead with the iPhone4. I have a line of service w ATTWS with no phone at this time, which will be eligible for an upgrade in about 45 days.

I agree, although performance

I agree, although performance on the 3G version does seem to suffer a bit, the folders and unified inbox more than makes up for it!

My iPhone 3G suffers a lot

My iPhone 3G suffers a lot with the upgrade of ios4! what can i do for that?
I restored it twice but everything looks the same!!! some help please!!!!!

speed on 3g with ios4

One of the things I found was to turn off location services.  It made a noticeable speed difference for me, although not back to 3g speeds.
