The GorillaMobile Ori case is a combination of aluminum and polycarbonate with a design inspired by origami. At first glance, it opens up folio style. The inside cover has a soft protective material that will not scratch your screen. The iPad itself slips into a white hard shell case which has rubbery silicone on the edges. It’s a tight fit and the iPad stays perfectly in place.
The Ori is much more than a basic folio case. It’s actually a stand that unfolds, transforms and performs various functions.
There are four main stands that you can configure the Ori in. The white hard shell case also rotates, depending on your needs.
At this point I would normally add in all my photo’s of the different stands. My photo’s will be at the end of this review. Joby already created a video that shows the Ori in action. Take a look at this to sse how it works.
I thought this case would be heavier than it is, but it’s not that bad and is comparable to some other cases I have tried in the past. There is a lot of unused space between the hard shell and the back cover. I believe that this is the result of the iPads’ rounded back.
I have mixed feelings on this case. I really like it a lot. It has multiple uses built into one case. I love the look of it. It reminds me of my old Aluminum Rhinoskin case in my Dell Axim Days. I thought it would be a hassle to set the stands up, but I was totally wrong there.
One of the difficulties I found was removing the iPad from the case. It took me a little bit of time to work it out. But that alone is not enough to make me think twice on this. The Apple Camera Kit does not fit in the space provided when the Ori is in the iPad. It is this little compatibility issue that would prevent me from using this case as my everyday case. I use the CCK all the time, specifically the SD slot. If Joby comes out with a version for the iPad 2, I hope they address this.
