Verizon to begin offering iPad Oct 28

Wow, what a surprise. According to the Verizon website, they'll begin selling the iPad on October 28 bundled with the MiFi Mobile Hotspot. They say this will give you WiFi just about anywhere. Prices start at $20/month for 1GB of data, compared to Apple's $15 for 200MB and $25 for 2GB. Like Apple's plans, these will be month to month with no obligation. This sounds like an excellent option, especially if you're in an area with weak or no AT&T coverage. You can see a press release on Apple's site. Note that Verizon is selling the WiFi model, not 3G. Also, AT&T will begin selling the iPad in its stores on the same day.

”Bill shock,” the queasy feeling cell phone users get when charges out of nowhere show up on their monthly bill, might be ended by proposed Federal Communications Commission regulations. Last month Verizon was within the spotlight after the Federal Communications Commission ordered the company to refund its customers to the tune of $50 million in charges for services neither wanted nor ordered practice that has gone on for years. Cell phone businesses aren’t' taking the new rules lying down and have unleashed lobbyists to fight against Federal Communications Commission bill shock restrictions that can be posted for public comment starting Thursday.

Although it is cheaper than the Apple plan, $20 for a GB of data still seems absurd.

Verizon iPad

Isn't it true that the AT&T iPad will function along most freeways, like I-5 for example, because of 3G coverage, whereas the Verizon iPad will only work at stationary spots. That makes the AT&T iPad far superior for traveling, I would think.

Hadn't heard that

Yes, I did hear that AT&T is focused in making sure it has coverage along the freeways. But I don't understand why the Verizon iPad would only work at stationary spots. It communicates with the Verizon network via the MiFi device. I would think that the MiFi would be just as mobile as any smartphone with a Verizon data plan. But I haven't looked into it in detail.
