iTunes 10 introduces Ping, an integrated social media service

At yesterday's event from Apple, perhaps the most unanticipated announcement was Ping, the main new feature of iTunes 10, which is now available for download via iTunes or the Apple website. Steve Jobs described Ping as a cross between Twitter, Facebook, and iTunes. You can read more about in on the Ping website or in the New York Times. Ping lets you connect with your friends and see what music they're listening to or buying. And similar to MySpace, you can follow bands, finding out about their new releases and upcoming concerts, etc. Of course, you can also share information about your musical favorites, though doing so is optional. Ping is a good way of finding music that you might like.

I have a Ph.D. in literature and writing, and a love of gizmos. I work part-time for iPhone Life magazine and really enjoy the people I work with, my iPad, and Apple's visionary products. It feels like a revolution. My Ph.D. dissertation, completed long ago, focused on the revolutionary consequences of digital technologies and anticipated some of the things we're seeing today.
