iPad competitors are coming

Lots of iPad wannabes are in the gate, and we'll be seeing them soon. You can read more about them in Macworld. And you can see a video at Engadget. The prototype in the video has a 10-inch screen and looks a lot like the iPad.

I have a Ph.D. in literature and writing, and a love of gizmos. I work part-time for iPhone Life magazine and really enjoy the people I work with, my iPad, and Apple's visionary products. It feels like a revolution. My Ph.D. dissertation, completed long ago, focused on the revolutionary consequences of digital technologies and anticipated some of the things we're seeing today.

As much as I like Windows 7,

As much as I like Windows 7, I just can't see it being of much use on a slate like this. ASUS just announced a similar slate for next year with Windows 7 which they will probably produce, however I expect to see these slates being successful with Android, WebOS or even Chrome OS when it gets here.

Windows 7 is a full file system OS and just won't have the performance, battery life or even instant-on that we are seeing on the iPad. If Microsoft is working on a slate version of their new mobile OS, and I would expect they are, then these slates will be a huge success.

Hi, Steve. Good points about

Hi, Steve. Good points about why running a full OS isn't really suited to these devices. Interestingly, Microsoft has already said that they won't be doing a version of their forthcoming Windows Phone 7 software for tablet devices. However, a couple friends have told me about Bill Gates's appearance on Larry King Live last night and the fact that he was asked his opinion about the iPad. He said it's nice, but it can't do everything. AND he said that Microsoft is working on a tablet OS. So apparently they have something in the works that will be lighter than a full-blown OS but have more functionality than the iPad.

Windows 7 tablet devices

I can understand about the instant on requirements of a tablet device and im loving the iPad but I think that the Windows 7 tablet devices would be extremely useful.

I would love to say have a mouse plugged in to the tablet and using my music creation software on a smaller more portable device. Even integrating touch screen controls instead of a mouse would be great.

Sometimes we don't need the full spec of a pc or laptop BUT it would still be great to be able to do all the things a pc / laptop can do just on a tablet device.

The thing is, with an iPad don't you have to sync it to a PC / Laptop anyway? Don't get me wrong I really do like the iPad but until the big players out their start creating software that my laptop can run, on the iPad, (which doesn't require syncing) i doubt I will have a use for one.

The next few months / even years is going to be a very interesting time and all this iPads better and Windows is better comments etc etc just gets a bit much. Different devices for different people. Computing in general is evolving, roll on the rest of this year to see what devices manufacturers bring to the table!

Actually, one doesn't

Actually, one doesn't necessarily need to sync an iPad. I think most functions can be done directly, such as buying music and downloading apps. But you're right — the sort of device you describe will be very appealing, and we'll likely see it at some point.
