Yatzius Rex is a fun “Yahtzee” simulator that actually takes the classic dice game a step further. To start with you can play in the classic Yahtzee mode which allows each player to take one turn which is up to three rolls of the dice. There are five dice in all and you're looking to get a wide range of different results in order to fill out your entire score card. You can build up points by getting the maximum possible score for each section.
If, for example, you roll four '1's' you can get four points in the one's box, which is the most possible. Other types of combinations you're going for will include 3 of a kind (add the total value of the dice with at least three of them being of one number), 4 of a kind, 5 of a kind (also called a Yahtzee), a small and large straight (4 or 5 consecutive numbers), a full house and many others.
At first every time you roll the dice you'll be able to fill out at least once of the boxes on the score card. As the game progresses, however, you'll quickly realize that there is a lot of strategy involved in the game. If, for example, you are trying to roll a full house (three of one number, two of another) because that is one of only a few boxes you might have left, if you don't get it you'll have to cross out one of the boxes. There is a lot of strategy involved in picking which boxes to cross out and which ones to leave to try to get later in the game.
Where Yatzius Rex gets even more interesting is with all the little changes or advancements they have made to the game. While the bulk of the game is the same, they have made just enough changes to really take this fun game to the next level. In this version there are some additional combinations you can go for, and some options such as deleting or accepting bad rolls to try to get the highest score. Remember, you're not just competing against yourself or your friends. You're also trying to beat the high score of everyone who has ever played the app, which is 4620!
When you pick up this game you'll quickly notice that it is very well designed. The game loads up smoothly and everything within the game functions quickly and easily. The animation of the dice seems realistic, as do the 'odds' of getting different results.
This game is an excellent choice for anyone enjoyed playing the classic Yahtzee game, or someone who's just looking to kill some time with a fun dice game. Players of all ages can enjoy this game, and since it saves your progress you can pick it up and play it for a few minutes at a time or play through entire games in one sitting without getting bored. Yatzius Rex is a free download from the App Store and if you want to check out the ad free version there is a pro version available for $2.99
