Time for my game reviews of some of the latest and best newcomers to the App Store! We have a whole slew of new games with more on the way, so let’s take a minute to recap what we have so far. These are a few of my favorites of the new crop of games that have popped up in the App Store! This week's reviews include the smash-hit Apocalypse Max as well as new endless runners, Zaxxon Escape and Amazing Runner.
Apocalypse Max: Ahhh, it’s nice when a game comes along that leaves an impression and keeps me engrossed for hours. Apocalypse Max has all the right ingredients in all the right measure. This exciting Zombie bloodfest is a well-executed (pun intended) platform side-scroller where you play as Max, on a mission to battle your way through the raging Zombie hordes.
As Max, you are always equipped with your lethal and oh-so-effective blades, and you also have optional arsenals you can select from and upgrade as you progress. The graphics of this game are excellent in a hand drawn, comic book style, and the soundtrack and audio effects are spot on.
The game takes a simple concept and a familiar game format and manages to keep things very interesting and entertaining with a steady rotation of different Zombie types and a wide range of environments, each with its own set of unique challenges and obstacles.
I award Apocalypse Max 4.5 out of 5 stars. It's a must have for any serious gamer and is available for $3.00 in the App Store..
There are a wide range of endless runner games in the App Store. This week we saw the debut of two new ones, both of which raise the bar for the genre.
Amazing Runner: This new sci-fi stylized endless runner is brought to us by the renowned Unreal Engine. Featuring the amazing graphics we have come to expect from the Unreal crew, Amazing Runner is just that, an amazing running game that will have you leaping over chasms, sprinting along walls, doing loopy-loops and smashing robotic sentries as you go about collecting your loot.
The soundtrack is so-so, but looking past that as just a minor fault, Amazing Runner is worth the $1.00, especially if you're a fan of the genre. And if you've never played an endless runner, this is one of the best ones to get your toes wet with. I give Amazing Runner a solid 4 stars.
Zaxxon: When I first got wind that Sega’s 80's classic, Zaxxon, was getting its iOS reboot, I almost fell into a swoon! Zaxxon?!? What gaming child of the 80’s didn't either play away their allowance on Zaxxon in the arcade or beg for the console cartridge for their Atari 2600?!? I know I was guilty of both. Zaxxon was the pinnacle of video game technology at the time and I was stoked to get the press release that Zaxxon was about to hit iOS. So I was in for a let down when I went to the App Store and discovered Zaxxon’s latest iteration is not the classic game I remember from the 80's, but rather the new Zaxxon Escape is in the form of an endless runner/flyer.
I quickly got over my disappointment and downloaded the app anyway, and got right to playing. Compared to what Zaxxon COULD HAVE BEEN as an iOS game, this Zaxxon flyer is a somewhat dull affair. HOWEVER, compared to other endless runners, Zaxxon is an excellent game and a refreshing take on the genre. Zaxxon will have you tilting your iDevice frantically as you swipe and swerve your way through masses of tunnel and obstacles.
Don't get this game if you are looking to re-live your wild youth with Zaxxon’s former glory as a 3-D sides rolling shooter, but if your love the endless runner, how-far-can-you-get game, then Zaxxon Escape is well worth the $1.00 price tag. I give Zaxxon a respectable 3.5 stars.
