The main appeal of these gadgets have been the AM/FM/NOAA weather radio that can be charged by batteries or more importantly, a hand crank. They also include an LED flashlight, adding to the appeal of their radios as an emergency tool. A major functional enhancement from previous models I've owned is the addition of a USB charging port. With the right USB phone cable, you could generate enough electricity with one minute of hand cranking to make a 30 second phone call.

I recently saw The Grey, with Liam Neeson, where their plane crashes in the wilderness and it left me paranoid. I'm going to keep an Eton radio, with a few USB cables, in my car. I might even have to start flying with the Rover, their more portable model!
