iLife 11 looks a lot like iOS apps

While we typically stick to iOS (iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch) products, today's announcement of iLife 11 from Apple can't be ignored.  The full screen interface for apps like iPhoto 11 look remarkably like a tab view app, with assorted buttons on a black gradient bar at the bottom of the screen.  Now that iOS devices are outselling Macs, and the halo effect (iOS customers becoming Mac customers) is in effect, the tail is wagging the dog and we can expect the Mac to adopt iOS features.  I'm guessing a touch screen interface can't be far away!

No touchscreen coming...

If you listened to the whole event you'd would have heard Steve make a point that touchscreens on laptops/desktops don't work. That's why the trackpad supports gestures.

Touchscreen

Of course I listened to the whole event although that post was before Steve mentioned that. HOWEVER, there is a whole thread at Gizmodo about how Steve denies Apple would do something, even vehemently and then goes ahead and does it. You have to sell what you have today. A touchscreen Mac WITH a keyboard and mouse or trackpad will be invaluable and I maintain, inevitable. To be able to point to an object and manipulate it is now part of our routine. It's hard to go back. But I agree with Steve that a vertical touchscreen, as a SINGLE point of interaction, is problematic. But that's a strawman. Such a Mac would be controlled primarily via keyboard and mouse or trackpad.

Apps on my mac

Todd,

I was delighted to see that apps are on their way to my desktop. BTW I have seen on the web, designs for an imac, similar to the old lampshade imac, that allows for the screen to be lowered into the horizontal position that Steve indicated was the ideal touch surface. So I am hopeful that a desktop touchscreen hybrid is in our future. It would just be great to be able to surf the web and read e-mail in the horizontal position, then flip the screen up to write longer posts or word process. I have a dream.
