My bio underneath the articles I write for iPhone Life Magazine say "an iPhone is almost always attached to his hip." And that's true, but I'm not satisfied with most of the holsters I've used to date. They are typically plastic and prone to breaking, or they don't swivel, leading to inevitable jabs to my side or stomach when entering or exiting the car. I'm always on the lookout for something better.
Enter Blacksmith Labs and their elegant BARRETT and BRUNO holsters, now on Kickstarter. These handmade leather cases, which come with a solid metal, 360-degree swivel clip, look to be the holster of my dreams. And despite the high quality materials, the price is quite reasonable, starting around $50.
The leather is hand selected and high grade, and the metal clip is finished in your choice of chrome, gun-metal, or brushed gold—a perfect companion for my gold iPhone 5s!
The clip sold me, as it should be a lot more reliable than plastic and a pleasure to use on a daily basis. But if that wasn't enough, the leather options offer a touch of craftsmanship that is rarely found these days. I love the juxtaposition of the highest technology from Apple and the old-world artistry these cases offer.
In addition to the three clip offerings, there are two case styles to choose from. One, dubbed the BRUNO, is a single piece of leather, folded and hand stitched like a slim "hot pocket," while the BARRETT is a more traditional design with a subtle machine stitched finish. In either case (pun intended) they are meant for a naked iPhone 5 or 5s, without a case. Future versions might be made for Android devices or iPhones in a traditional case, as well as alternative leather colors and belt clip finishes. I hope to get a hold of one for a hands-on review soon. In the meantime, the Blacksmith Labs' holsters are selling well on Kickstarter.
